The Department of Aquatic Resources conducts environmental analysis, scientific advice, research and education in aquatic ecology with a focus on fish and shellfish. The department is SLU's largest and has just over 180 employees at three main locations: Lysekil, Öregrund and Stockholm (Drottningholm), as well as four field stations.

Our operations are strongly profiled towards data collection and analysis of fish and fisheries and ecosystems. The institution is characterized by intensive collaboration with the surrounding society. This creates a vital research environment and gives us unique opportunities to develop knowledge that is close to management and directly applicable in practice.

Description:

We are seeking a dedicated postdoctoral fellow to study the role of benthic and pelagic energy transfer pathways to fish in coastal waters by combining comparative field studies, analyses of isotope data and experiments. Specific questions to be addressed in the project include how shifts in the balance between benthic and pelagic production may affect food web structure and fish biomass production and how the relative efficiency of manipulating nutrient loading and fish biomass in mitigating eutrophication symptoms vary across water color and nutrient gradients.

This position provides an opportunity to contribute both to novel understanding about the role of light limitation for ecosystem structure and function, as well as knowledge needed to better manage coastal water quality and fish communities. Not only will you collaborate with the group of researchers involved in the project (involving researchers at SLU, Umeå, Lund and Stockholm University), but also be part of  a dynamic research group (www.slu.se/fishinfoodwebs) working on dynamics of fish communities and aquatic food-webs, and their ecological and evolutionary responses to climate change, exploitation and other human pressures.

Duties:

Your two primary tasks are (i) to analyze how coastal food webs in general, and fish communities specifically, respond to light and biogeochemical gradients along the Baltic Sea coast using already collected data ranging from primary production to fish community metrics and (ii) to set up and carry out a field experiment to study energy flows and the relative role of bottom-up and top-down control in coastal food webs under light and/or nutrient limitation. There are also possibilities to participate in other related research, by aiding in other projects in the group and mentoring of undergraduate students.

Qualifications:

Documented skills in and experience of aquatic community ecology are required. Expertise in and experience of experimental ecology, community ecology theory and fish ecology are advantageous. Expertise and knowledge in biogeochemistry are considered a merit. You are fluent in spoken and written English, a good collaborator and have good communication skills. We place great emphasis on personal qualities such as ability to work in teams as well as independently.
