PhD position in Evolutionary Ecology in the Snook Lab at Stockholm University

The Snook lab at Stockholm University is seeking a fully funded 4 year PhD student to begin as soon as possible. We study the evolutionary ecology of reproduction and genetic mechanisms underlying adaptation and plasticity. Our main study organisms are insects, including Drosophila and butterflies. Working language in the lab is English.

 

The PhD project investigates the consequences of climate warming on butterfly reproduction. Thermal sensitivity of reproduction is well-known but the extent to which climate warming may affect population persistence and affect response to climate change is broadly unknown. The project will take a comparative approach using sister taxa from Pieridae and Nymphalidae that vary in host plant use, voltinism and geographic distribution. Critical and fertility thermal limits will be determined in the laboratory across species and across populations of each species. Traits that associated with thermally induced sterility will be determined and then used in field work throughout Spain to establish the ecological relevance of thermal fertility limits via surveys of natural populations. Using citizen science data on butterfly distribution and abundance, the project aims to link experimental data on predictors of thermal fertility limits with field data on fertility loss to generate more evolutionarily realistic models to improve forecasts of species responses to future climate change scenarios. Thus, the project is searching for a candidate with good knowledge in insect ecology, thermal biology and/or evolution. Experience of fieldwork, insect rearing, and a good grounding in statistics are considered important qualifications.

Open research engineer position and coordinated mesocosm experiments in 2023

Post doc position: Forecasting thermal niche evolution of insect pests.

The holder of the position will investigate year-round seasonal (a)synchronies in plant and microbial carbon and nitrogen cycling in terrestrial ecosystems across the Arctic, and how these are driven by large-scale environmental and community variation.

 

The position is part of a large interdisciplinary project that aims to understand and quantify how processes during the arctic winter may be decisive for overall feedbacks from arctic tundra to the global climate. Arctic ecosystems store large amounts of organic carbon in plants and soil. Uptake of carbon by arctic plants is strongly limited by their access to nutrients, especially nitrogen, due to competition by microbes. Year-round carbon and nitrogen balances thus depend the activities of plant and microbial communities and their seasonality. This multidisciplinary project will involve a research team of about eleven senior and postdoctoral scientists, four PhD students and three technical staff. Together, we will advance basic knowledge of plant and microbial activities during the cold season. The project will further assess the environmental drivers and community traits that may be used to up-scale and predict effects of asynchronies on year-round carbon and nitrogen balances of tundra.

Postdoc: Plant Evolutionary Ecology, Uppsala University

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Plant Evolutionary Ecology available at Uppsala University (two years)

Most flowering plant species are hermaphroditic, but current understanding of plant reproductive ecology and floral evolution is almost exclusively based on female function. The postdoc will work in a project that addresses key knowledge gaps in our understanding of floral evolution by focusing on the male part. Specifically, the project will study selection via male reproductive success in both the pollination and post-pollination phase, and explore how the importance of the two phases changes in relation to pollination intensity.

The project involves designing and conducting experimental work in a common garden and greenhouse (manipulations of pollination, phenotypic selection, experimental evolution), analyses of phenotypic and genetic data, and writing and publishing papers. The fellowship is placed at the Department of Ecology and Genetics at the Evolutionary Biology Centre, Uppsala University, and is funded by a tax-free scholarship for two years. The Carl Tryggers foundation provides financial support directly to the successful applicant (https://www.carltryggersstiftelse.se/). The PI of the project is Prof. Nina Sletvold, and collaborators include Assoc. Prof. Åsa Lankinen (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Alnarp) and bioinformatician Douglas Scofield (Uppsala University).

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a PhD degree in Plant Ecology, Plant Evolution, or similar. Experience with designing and running field or garden experiments on plants is a requirement. Additional experience with bioinformatics, genetic analyses and programming in R and other platforms is a plus. Proficiency in English is required. The ranking of candidates will be based on scientific merits within the subject area of the position.

I'd like to draw your attention to three postdoc positions available in our subject group, Integrated Plant Protection here at SLU:

 

I have a postdoctoral position (2 years) in my lab at SLU, in the south of Sweden, to work on expression and evolution of Phytophthora infestans effectors under field conditions. One line of research will involve sequencing of P. infestans isolates from the field focusing on pathogenicity determinants, e.g., by using techniques such as PenSeq and bioinformatic approaches. A second line of research will explore the hypothesis that oomycetes maintain large numbers of effectors, in part to allow them to better compete against multiple other microbes in the plant pathobiome or symbiome. We will therefore analyse the expression and function of effectors from both the late blight pathogen P. infestans and the symbiotic oomycete Pythium oligandrum during interactions with potato and with other microbes.

 

This is a career-developing position for a junior researcher, so priority is given to those who have received their PhD no longer than 3 years ago.

The second postdoc position is in evolutionary biology- Evolution-proofing potato disease control, led by Associate Professor Åsa Lankinen. This project aims to reduce the spread of fungicide resistance in the potato pathogen Alternaria solani, the causal agent of early blight disease. Because resistance development is an evolutionary response in the pathogen, this project seeks sustainable solutions through a combination of methods based on eco-evolutionary knowledge. One line of research will involve empirical tests of resistance development in the laboratory, and links between the disease, pathogen genetic variation and agroecological factors at the farm level. Another line of research will involve mathematical modelling to generate hypotheses regarding pest management methods that can reduce fungicide-resistance development.

 

This is a career-developing position for a junior researcher, so priority is given to those who have received their PhD no longer than 3 years ago.

And finally, we also have a third position as a postdoc in phytopathology which is a scholarship position involving a collaboration between SLU and University of Udine in Italy and is led by Professor Johan Stenberg. The postdoctoral researcher will explore coevolutionary patterns in the strawberry system by harnessing wild plants (Fragaria vesca) and isolating their main fungal "bodyguard" (Aureobasidium pullulans) from different habitats and geographic areas across Europe. The plants will be screened for resistance against the most important phytopathogen and the isolated "bodyguard" strains will be screened for their antagonistic potential.

For legal/tax reasons, the successful candidate must not be a Swedish citizen and must not have worked previously in Sweden. Thus, only non-Swedish candidates are invited to apply. This project will be financed by a 24 month tax-free scholarship.
