PhD position in limnology, Uppsala University

A PhD student position in Microbial community ecology is available at the Department of Ecology and Genetics, Limnology.

The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to studies of ecosystems. For more information, see www.ieg.uu.se.

The limnology programme includes 3 major, highly interactive and collaboration research groups: microbial ecology, population and community ecology and biogeochemistry. See https://www.ieg.uu.se/limnology/

Project description: It is well known that different ecosystems are connected to each other through transport of energy and matter, which in turn affects the functioning of ecosystems. It is however, less investigated is how dispersal of living organisms affects ecosystems, not primarily due to their functions, but rather because of the matter they transport between ecosystems. This project focuses on the dispersal of bacteria between ecosystems, and their importance as a food source for higher trophic levels. One hypothesis to be tested is that the importance of bacteria as a food source depends on their food quality, for instance related to their elemental stoichiometry. The project is financed by the Swedish Research Council.

Qualifications required: To be eligible for a PhD-student position the applicant must hold a master degree (or equivalent) in Limnology, Ecology, Microbial ecology or something similar. To be qualified, candidates should have knowledge and experience in the fields of community ecology and/or microbial ecology. Emphasis will be placed on the candidates’ personal suitability, including independence and teamwork skills. Candidates must be able to express themselves very well in spoken as well as written English.

Qualifications desired: Previous experience from practical work in lab and field, including experimental and microbiology methods such as microscopy, flow cytometry, cultivation, stoichiometric analyses, and molecular characterization of microbial communities. Theoretical knowledge of metacommunity and metaecosystem ecology. Knowledge and experience of statistical methods such as multivariate methods and bioinformatics.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.

Starting date: As agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. The graduate program covers four years of full-time study. The position can be combined with teaching or other duties at the department (maximum 20%), which prolongs the employment with the corresponding time. The salary will be set according to local agreements. Rules governing PhD candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/search/?hits=30&languageId=1&search-language_en=English. More information about postgraduate studies at Uppsala University is available at http://www.teknat.uu.se/education/postgraduate/.

Scope of employment: 100%.

For further information about the position please contact: Professor, Eva Lindström Eva.Lindstrom@ebc.uu.se.

Application: The application should include 1) a letter of intent describing yourself, your research interests and motivation of why you want to do a PhD, and why you are suitable for the position, 2) your CV, 3) a short description of your education, 4) a copy of your master degree, your course grades and a copy of your master thesis, 5) the names and contact information to at least two reference persons (e-mail address and phone no.), and 6) publications produced The application should be written in English.

Two post doc positions at SLU Uppsala

Dear all,

Please help spreading the news that Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala recruiting two post docs to participate in our Vinnova (Sweden’s innovation agency) funded  project that explores innovative ways to improve the CO2-withdrawal by forest management, while at the same time considering the wealth of other ecosystem services and biodiversity. We apply a cross disciplinary approach, and covers a broad range of topics and disciplines, including C flux measurements, biodiversity assessments, water quality, and life cycle assessments of both raw material and practices.

Position 1: Postdoctoral position - Nitrogen input, soil fungal community and stability of forest carbon stock.

We are looking for a person who can work on clarifying how fertilization influence stability of forest soil C stocks. More specifically the work address how disturbance (logging) influence stability of the soil C stock, if effects differs depending on past fertilization, and if stability can be linked to functional composition of the soil fungal community.

For more information on the position and instructions of how to apply see:

https://www.slu.se/en/about-slu/work-at-slu/jobs-vacancies/?rmpage=job&rmjob=4531&rmlang=UK

Position 2: Researcher/Postdoctoral position – Climate effects of forest- based biomaterial and bioenergy

We are looking for a person who can assess the climate impact of the production of biomaterials and bioenergy from forest systems. The work consists of modeling greenhouse gas balances from a system perspective using life cycle assessment (LCA). An important part of the work is to model biogenic carbon flows between soil, biomass, harvested wood products and atmosphere, and to calculate the climate effect when forest raw materials replace (substitute) other products in the society.

For more information on the position and instructions of how to apply see:

https://www.slu.se/en/about-slu/work-at-slu/jobs-vacancies/?rmpage=job&rmjob=4643&rmlang=UK

Best wishes,

Joachim Strengbom

PhD position available at Uppsala University

PhD position in climate driven speciation, studying climate adaptation, mito-nuclear interactions and hybrid dysfunction in pied and collared flycatchers of Öland, Sweden. Deadline for application March 4th, 2021. See below and : https://www.uu.se/en/about-uu/join-us/details/?positionId=378242

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden's most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of around SEK 7 billion.

A PhD student position in climate driven speciation is available at the Department of Ecology and Genetics, Animal Ecology. The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to studies of ecosystems. For more information, see www.ieg.uu.se. Within the program of Animal Ecology, we study the ecological causes of and evolutionary consequences of genetic variation within and between animal species.

Project description: Our group uses a combination of long-term ecological monitoring and genomic approaches in pied and collared flycatchers from a hybrid zone located on the Swedish island Öland to better understand mechanisms of speciation. Divergent climate adaptation is a likely evolutionary route to postzygotic isolation, but evidence showing that climate-driven genetic divergence may lead to hybrid incompatibilities is lacking. In eukaryotic organisms, climate adaptation largely depends on co-evolving mitochondrial and nuclear (mitonuclear) DNA, which together encode the proteins needed to build the biochemical machinery responsible for energy metabolism. The two exciting main goals of this PhD project are to identify specific allelic changes within the networks of mitonuclear units underlying both (1) divergent climate adaptation, and (2) hybrid dysfunction. To achieve these goals detailed ecological studies and field experiments will be integrated with new techniques to measure cellular mitochondrial function directly in the field, and with several state-of the art genomic approaches.

Duties: The successful candidate will conduct field sampling (including both population monitoring and field experiments), measure mitochondrial function in blood samples and perform genomic analysis. The PhD student will work together with a cross-disciplinary supervisor team, have the opportunity to actively shape the detailed development of the project and to drive the writing and publication of the results. Attendance to local seminaries series, advanced relevant courses and international conferences is also expected.

Requirements: To be eligible for this position the applicant must hold a master degree (or equivalent) in ecology, evolution or in closely related disciplines. Candidates must also be able to express themselves fluently in spoken as well as written English. In ranking eligible candidates, special importance will be given to scientific skills. In the assessment of scientific merits, especially analytic skills and the ability to formulate sharp hypothesis and logic arguments will be highly valued. We attach great importance to personal qualities such as that the candidate is highly motivated and with a strong general interest in ecology and evolution.

Additional qualifications: Previous experiences with field ornithology and/or bioinformatics are desired but not required. Previous experiences with practical research projects and statistical/mathematical modelling are highly desired.

Rules governing PhD candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines ttp://regler.uu.se/?languageId=1. More information about postgraduate studies at Uppsala University is available at http://www.teknat.uu.se/education/postgraduate/.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.

Starting date: 01-04-2021 or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7.

Scope of employment: 100 %

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden's most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of around SEK 7 billion.

Department of Ecology and Genetics is looking for two enthusiastic PhD students to work within project ReCod in Program of Animal Ecology. The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with research spanning from evolutionary ecology and genetics to ecosystem studies. For more information, see www.ieg.uu.se.

The positions are located at Campus Gotland in Visby, and field and laboratory work is conducted at Research Station Ar in northern Gotland. Campus Gotland is an integrated part of Uppsala University. You will have the opportunity to take advantage of the courses organized by the new graduate school in sustainable development. For more information, see www.campusgotland.uu.se.

Project description: Cod is one of the most important fish species in the Baltic Sea, but the Baltic cod population has collapsed during the last decade. One of the main reasons for the population collapse is high mortality at egg stage. Project ReCod, a collaboration between Uppsala University and BalticWaters2030 (www.balticwaters2030.org), aims to develop the methodology to push the cod population through the vulnerable egg stage by releasing hatchery-reared yolk-sac larvae at carefully selected sites. This will be done by producing large number of yolk-sac larvae under optimal conditions in the hatchery. The ultimate goal is to strengthen and rebuild populations of the top fish predator in the Baltic sea. The project is led by Prof Anssi Laurila (scientific leader) and Prof Gunilla Rosenqvist (head of Research station Ar) in collaboration with the project leader from BalticWaters2030.

Position 1: Rebuilding the Baltic cod populations by large-scale release of yolk-sac larvae. The thesis focuses on the methodology of producing, raising and releasing cod eggs and larvae as well as on the success of the releases. You will conduct exploratory fishing and environmental surveys at the release sites to assess factors affecting the establishment success. You will also conduct experimental studies to assess factor affecting establishment success.

Position 2: Phenotypic and genetic variation in early life history of the Baltic cod. The thesis focuses on the role of environmental variation in the performance of cod eggs and larvae and its potential on increasing survival through these stages. Another topic is phenotypic and genetic variation within the eastern population of the Baltic cod. You will use laboratory and field experiments to disentangle how environment and genetics affect survival and performance of early life stages in cod.

Duties: You will work together with several persons to develop a well-adapted methodology for rearing and releasing cod larvae. These will be combined with detailed studies on cod biology to find a well-functioning methodology to rebuild cod populations. You will also participate in teaching at undergraduate level.

We are looking for enthusiastic, highly motivated and independent candidates who must be able to express themselves fluently in spoken and written English. Driving license is required for work in Research station Ar.

Additional qualifications: Good knowledge on statistics (programming in R), experience on aquatic field work and on fish or other aquatic organisms is advantageous.

Application: The application should include 1) a letter of intent describing yourself, your research interests, motivation of why you want to do a PhD, if one of the theses interests you more, and why you are suitable for the position, 2) your CV, 3) a short description of your education, 4) a copy of your master degree, your course grades and a copy of your master thesis, 5) the names and contact information to at least two reference persons, and 6) publications produced, The application should be written in English.

Starting date: 01-05-2021 or as otherwise agreed.

For further information about the position please contact: Prof Anssi Laurila, Anssi.Laurila@ebc.uu.se, +46 18 471 64 93.

Please submit your application by 8 March 2021, UFV-PA 2021/432.
