[Oikos-listan] Uppsala Tenure-track Assistant Professorship in Plant Evolutionary Functional Genomics

Please, help spread information about this position to potential candidates!

Thanks,

Jon Ågren

Tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in Plant Evolutionary Functional Genomics at Uppsala University

Department of Ecology and Genetics, division in Plant Ecology and Evolution, Evolutionary Biology Centre.

The position includes research, teaching at graduate and undergraduate level, outreach activities and some administration. The holder is expected to establish research of highest international standards within the subject area, and to contribute to the development of research and teaching of the department.

The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research and teaching expertise, of which particular weight will be given to research expertise.

Research in Plant Evolutionary Functional Genomics involves molecular analyses to understand evolutionary and ecological processes underlying the generation and maintenance of biological diversity among plants. The subject area includes functional studies of variation at the molecular level as well as analysis and interpretation of large-scale omics-data to understand biological function, evolution of diversity, and adaptation of plants to the abiotic and biotic environment.

The position is for four years and tenure-track: An associate senior lecturer (the Swedish term for Assistant Professor) has the right to apply for promotion to senior lecturer. If the associate senior lecturer is deemed suitable and fulfills the criteria for promotion established by the Faculty Board he/she shall be promoted and employed as senior lecturer (permanent position). At a subsequent step, an application for promotion to full professor can be made.

According to the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance those qualified for appointment as associate senior lecturer are persons who have obtained a doctoral degree or achieved the equivalent competence. Priority is given to those who obtained their degree no more than seven years prior to the end of the application period.

The Evolutionary Biology Centre (EBC) of Uppsala University offers a vibrant research environment. It bridges a broad range of disciplines in the biological sciences, and is an internationally very strong environment within the field of evolutionary biology. Information about EBC and the Department of Ecology and Genetics can be found at http://www.ebc.uu.se/ and  http://www.ieg.uu.se/?languageId=1

The position is part of the SciLifeLab Fellow program 2017-2021 and comes with a core funding of three million SEK per year for four years, which includes substantial funds to cover running costs. SciLifeLab (www.scilifelab.se) is a national centre for large-scale hypothesis driven research within molecular bioscience.

More detailed information about the position and information about how to apply can be found at

http://www.uu.se/en/about-uu/join-us/details/?positionId=147856#

Closing date for application is May 29, 2017

[Oikos-listan] 3rd Symposium on Ecological Networks and 3rd Symposium on Molecular Analysis of Trophic Interactions, abstract deadline 30 April

Dear All,

Please note that the submission of abstracts will be closing soon (April 30) for the two symposia held back-to-back in Uppsala 11-15 Sept, 2017: the 3rd Symposium on Ecological Networks and the 3rd Symposium on Molecular Analysis of Trophic Interactions.

Since we aim for a program where all attendants can participate with a talk or poster, you should submit a notice of interest and the abstract of a talk or poster within the next eight days.

All themes from within the broad remits of the respective symposia are warmly welcome. In submitting the abstract, you are asked are to choose from whether you want to submit an oral presentation or a poster -- and whether (should your oral presentation not fit into the oral program) you will still be happy to present it as a poster. Once the final acceptance of abstracts is completed (31 May), you will be invited to update this notice of interest to a final conference registration, at which stage we will also ask you to deposit the conference fee.

Please visit http://www.slu.se/ecology-symposium - and sign up now!

Looking forward to seeing you in Uppsala!

Best wishes,

[Oikos-listan] PhD position in evolutionary genomics at Lund University

PhD student position in evolutionary genetics/genomics available at Lund
University in Sweden.

Supervisor: Jessica Abbott, http://jessicakabbott.com/

Application deadline: May 18th 2017

Short project description: The aim of this project will be to
investigate the genetics of sex differences using experimentally evolved
populations of the hermaphroditic flatworm Macrostomum ligano that have
been selected for male or female fitness. We have now established that
female-selected populations have increased in female fitness and
decreased in male fitness compared to male-selected populations,
indicative of sexual antagonism and/or a genetically based trade-off in
these traits. The project will therefore attempt to determine the
genomic basis of the response to sex-limited selection using a
combination of various techniques, including RNAseq, Fst outlier
analysis, GWAS, and quantitative genetics. For more information, see
https://lu.mynetworkglobal.com/en/what:job/jobID:147300/

Required qualifications:

Master's in bioinformatics, molecular biology, genetics or
evolutionary biology.
Other experience with (in order of priority): bioinformatics,
molecular biology, genetics or evolutionary biology.
Lab experience with invertebrates.
Interest in sex chromosome evolution.
Good written and verbal skills in English.
Ability to work well independently and in a group.

Desirable qualifications:

Experience with DNA and RNA extraction.
Experience with analysis of genomic data, including GWAS and Fst
analysis.
Experience with quantitative genetics.
Experience with experimental design and/or experimental evolution.

To apply: Applications must be sent via Lund University's online
application system. Instructions for using the system can be found here:
http://www.lunduniversity.lu.se/about/work-at-lund-university. The
application should include a CV detailing relevant experience, a
personal statement explaining why you are a good fit for this project,
copy of master's thesis and/or any relevant published papers, and names
and contact information of two reference persons.

Ämne: [IUFRO RG 7.03 FORENT] Grad position at the Univ. of New Hampshire, Ecology/evolution of forest threats

The Garnas lab (http://colsa.unh.edu/faculty/garnas) seeks a highly motivated graduate student (MSc or PhD) to begin in Fall 2017. The topic of the successful student’s research is flexible but will fall broadly within the current themes of the lab, namely the ecology and evolution of insects and/or fungi within forested systems, particularly in the context of biological invasion.  We use a variety of approaches including field and lab experiments, genetic tools including NextGen technologies, and modeling to address questions relevant to forest dynamics and forest pestilence. Creative, dynamic students with broad interests in ecology and evolution are encouraged to apply. Position will be funded by a Teaching Assistantship for a minimum of 1-2 years, with a Research Assistantship providing the balance.

The University of New Hampshire and the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment are home to a vibrant community of productive researchers with a strong commitment to student success (see http://www.unh.edu/unhtoday/2017/03/excellence-ecology for recent accolades).  Located in the town of Durham, UNH is a beautiful campus surrounded by forest and natural landscapes.  Only 30 minutes from the sea and less than 2 hours from the White Mountains, outdoor and other recreational activities abound, including right on campus.

Interested applicants, please send:
  - a CV
  - a brief summary of research interests, highlighting any relevant experience
  - contact information for three references

as a SINGLE pdf file to foresthealth.gradposition@unh.edu. Position will be open until filled.

(Apologies for any cross-postings)
