[Oikos-listan] PhD position/Evolutionary ecology of butterflies and moths/Linnaeus University/Kalmar

PhD position: Ecology with emphasis in evolutionary ecology of butterflies and moths

https://lnu.se/en/meet-linnaeus-university/work-at-the-university/?rmpage=job&rmjob=2480&rmlang=UK

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to be part of a group to investigate the causes and consequences of genetic and phenotypic variation, using butterflies and moths as model systems.

Part of the research will be conducted in within the framework of an ongoing project regarding the ecological consequences for populations and species of variation in functionally important traits, such as life-history characteristics and colour patterns. For this, we have at our disposal ecological data for a large number of moth species that can be used for comparative analyses to evaluate hypotheses and test predictions.

The research will also include initiating a new project. Field studies and laboratory work will be used to collect information on the distribution, dynamics, genetic structure and composition of natural (meta-) populations of selected moths and butterflies, likely on the island of Öland. Data will be used to investigate how environmental heterogeneity impact on ecological and evolutionary processes and shape patterns of population-level diversity, and how population-level diversity in turn may feed-back on ecological and evolutionary processes.

The successful applicant will be part of EEMiS, a multidisciplinary center of excellence within Linnaeus University.

Project leader and principal supervisor: Professor Anders Forsman (anders.forsman@lnu.se)

The application (in English) should contain a CV (with telephone and e-mail), documentation of exams and grades, a description of motivation and experiences relevant to the research project and any other documentation that the applicant would like to present. The candidates should provide at least two letters of recommendation (including contact information (telephone number and e-mail) for the reference persons).

You apply through https://lnu.se/en/meet-linnaeus-university/work-at-the-university/

Deadline for applications is the 26th of January, 2017

Welcome with your application!

Please distribute to potential candidates.

[Oikos-listan] Representative fo INNGE needed!

Hi all,

The International Network of Next Generation Ecologists (INNGE, http://innge.net) is a network of ecologists that seeks to increase the prospects and collaborations for early-career ecologists. In practice, they intervene in national and international conferences through representatives from the various ecological societies.

I have served as one of their representatives for 2 years now. Unfortunately, I couldn't participate to the OIKOS conference this year, and will not do it either next year. Hence, I feel that I should leave my seat as representative to someone who will be more available for promoting the activities of the INNGE network (and who plans to go to OIKOS 2017!). A young scientist would be more appropriate, but anyone interested in promoting young researchers' careers is welcome (which are very much in need of help nowadays, read this article: "The plight of young Scientists" http://www.nature.com/news/the-plight-of-young-scientists-1.20870).

Let me know rapidly if you're interested!

[Oikos-listan] PhD Scholarship: Disease genomics of two New Zealand finfish species

PhD Scholarship: Disease genomics of two New Zealand finfish species

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to be part of a group to investigate the disease genomics of the New Zealand snapper (Chrysophrys auratus) and trevally (Pseudocaranx georgianus).

Supervisors

Dr. Maren Wellenreuther, Plant and Food Research (PFR), Nelson, New Zealand

Dr. Steve Bird, Waikato University, New Zealand

Aquaculture is the fastest growing food-production sector and New Zealand has the potential to develop a range of locally grown finfish species to meet this increasing demand. New genomics-based selective breeding programs are needed to help develop recently domesticated fish species into premium products. Plant and Food Research (http://www.plantandfood.co.nz) is known worldwide for its innovative breeding and genomics research, and it is leading the development of New Zealand seafood genomics.

This PhD project will involve working alongside a group of experienced researchers to study the genomes of the New Zealand snapper and trevally to identify and characterize immune genes, screen for genome-wide disease markers using a pedigree from domesticated populations, evaluate the bacterial disease metacommunities and conduct gene expression analyses using transcriptomics and qPCR. This will involve using high-throughput sequencing approaches, coupled with automated and error-reduced phenotyping. The overall goal is to characterize the immune systems of both fish species to better understand disease resistance in domesticated populations, facilitating a rapid and efficient selective breeding programme.

PhD Project Aims

1. Use whole genome assemblies and transcriptomes to identify immune genes and pathways,

2. Use genomic information to improve detection of novel disease QTLs,

3. Assess stress and disease resistance of hatchery individuals, and understand their bacterial disease communities.

This PhD project will provide an excellent opportunity to learn the latest interdisciplinary technologies and apply them to fish genomics. The PhD student will gain experience working in academic, government and private sector institutions. They will be a member of a highly active and collaborative group of researchers, and help develop new technological approaches and applied-genomic tools.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated researcher, with a strong background and interest in genomics and molecular biology. Experience with a coding and/or scripting languages is a bonus. This position will be based primarily in Nelson (http://www.nelsonnz.com) and comes with a three-year scholarship that provides a stipend and university (domestic-level) fees. This project is supported by the MBIE grant ‘Enhancing production of New Zealand’s seafood sector using accelerated breeding techniques’.

Applicants should send a CV, a statement of their research interests and a cover letter to Maren Wellenreuther (Maren.Wellenreuther@plantandfood.co.nz) and Steve Bird (sbird@waikato.ac.nz). Candidate selection will begin mid-December but applications will be considered until the position is filled. The ideal starting date is 1 April 2017. International students with strong credentials are welcome and encouraged to apply. [Oikos-listan] The Graduate Research School in Genomic Ecology (GENECO) at Lund University now opens for new applicants

The Graduate Research School in Genomic Ecology (GENECO) at Lund University now opens for new applicants

At this moment, we are opening for applications from PhD students enrolled at universities in Sweden and neighbouring countries, for the 2017 cohort: deadline January 20th 2017.

What is GENECO?

Genomic Ecology is an interdisciplinary research field at the interface between ecology, evolution, molecular biology and genomics. It forges the links between molecular biologists who work with genomics (and "post-genomic" tools), evolutionary biologists and ecologists who aim to understand the genetic mechanisms that underlie the process of evolution. Lund University provides an internationally recognized strong research environment within genomic ecology research.

What do we offer?

  1. A stimulating environment to meet and network with other PhD students and scientists working at the interface between ecology, evolution, molecular biology, genomics and bioinformatics.
  2. A variety of advanced PhD courses (will give graduate education credits).
  3. The opportunity to attend an international two-week workshop in Cesky Krumlov 'Workshop on Genomics'.
  4. A mentor programme directed to career planning inside or outside academia, networking and professional/personal development.
  5. Opportunity to apply for travel grants to cover a research visit to a foreign laboratory.
