Postdoc position at SLU Umeå, Sweden - Application of AI for wildlife conservation & management

Dear all,

We are looking for a postdoc that will work on the application of AI for wildlife conservation & management within the newly started Viltbild project, a collaboration between SLU and the Swedish Association for Hunting and Wildlife Management.

Postdoc in the application of AI for wildlife conservation & management

The Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies (WFE), SLU, Umeå, is looking for a postdoc with strong interests in wildlife conservation technology. She/he will work within Viltbild, a collaborative project between SLU and the Swedish Association for Hunting and Wildlife Management (SAHWM) aimed at collecting, processing and analysing data on a wide range of wildlife species from camera traps. The vision is that Viltbild becomes an important citizen-science platform where images collected by hunters and other stakeholders contribute to monitoring, conservation and management of diverse wildlife species in Sweden. The successful applicant will lead the development of AI components of the Viltbild’s web portal and be part of a growing conservation technology hub at WFE. The ambition is that she/he will also perform cutting-edge science on AI and wildlife ecology.

Centennial anniversary of the ecotype concept: the legacy of Göte Turesson – 29th of November

Centennial anniversary of the ecotype concept: the legacy of Göte Turesson – 29th of November

This year is the centennial anniversary of the ecotype concept, which was coined by the Swedish geneticist Göte Turesson in 1922. Since then, the ecotype has served – and is still serving – as a focal concept in evolutionary ecology, especially in studies of the interaction between plants and their environment. The concept and methods introduced by Turesson have also had a large impact on the assessment of phenotypic variation for crop improvement, in its modern form known as "envirotyping".

Turesson got his basic education in Biology at the University of Washington, USA. He returned to Sweden and received his PhD from Lund University in 1923. He was active in southern Sweden until 1935 when he became a professor in systematic botany and genetics at the Agricultural College at Ultuna outside Uppsala.

We plan to celebrate the anniversary by organizing a symposium in the late autumn this year. The symposium will be held on 29th November together with the annual NordPlant meeting on "Envirotyping for plant breeding and precision agriculture"  which takes place the day after, 30th November.  Both meetings are located at Blå Hallen, Ecology Building, Lund University. The symposium will be in a hybrid format, with the option to participate online.

The programme on 29th November starts with a welcome reception between 08.30-09.15, followed by a general introduction and then a presentation of the historical context of the ecotype concept by Anna Tunlid (Lund University). Invited specialists will present different aspects of present-day applications of the ecotype concept. Confirmed speakers include Timo van der Niet (University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa), Hans Jaqcuemyn (KU Leuven, The Netherlands), Sophie Karrenberg (Uppsala University), Marie Brandrud (Oslo University), Honor C. Prentice (Lund University) and Björn Widén (Lund University).

There here are open slots for contributed talks. Please, contact magne.friberg@biol.lu.se if you would like to contribute!

We have launched a webpage where you can register for updates about the symposium:

Organizers: Stefan Andersson, Nils Cronberg, Magne Friberg, Mikael Hedrén, Øystein Opedal from Lund University and Helena Persson from SLU Alnarp

Sponsors: Elly Olssons fond, Mendelian Society in Lund

Univ Helsinki: Eight postdoctoral researchers in biodiversity-ecosystem functioning, community ecology, biodiversity science, statistical ecology and statistics

Dear All,

The Research Centre for Ecological Change (REC) is looking for eight postdoctoral researchers in biodiversity-ecosystem functioning, community ecology, biodiversity science, statistical ecology and statistics for a fixed term of 2-3 years with a possibility of continuation. The deadline for application is September 11, 2022.

The overreaching aim of REC is to generate a coordinated analysis of long-term ecological data to understand the drivers and consequences of global change on biodiversity. To reveal biotic responses to ongoing environmental change, REC takes advantage of the unique long-term datasets collected in Finland. REC also develops state-of-the-art methodology for analysing long-term spatially structured data sets within a joint species distribution modelling framework.

For the full ad, please refer to the attachment or look here: https://bit.ly/3QIU4tw. To apply, please use the ”Apply Now” button available on that web page. Applications received through other channels cannot be considered.

Best wishes

Call for data papers on freshwater species

Call for data papers to fill gaps on freshwater species

GBIF and the open-access Journal of Limnology have announced a call for researchers to submit data papers about species that inhabit the world's inland waters.

While freshwater environments cover less than one per cent of Earth's surface and contain less than three per cent of all water on the planet, they are home to at least 10 per cent of all species. Many freshwater macro- and microorganisms also serve as sentinels for the health of these ecosystems, which provide essential life-giving benefits to all species, even terrestrial ones like our own. Despite the severe threats freshwater biodiversity faces, understanding of and investments in its protection typically pales in comparison to those directed toward the terrestrial and marine realms.

To assist efforts to fill gaps in primary biodiversity data on freshwater species, GBIF will sponsor will the article processing charges—normally €624—for the first sixteen (16) manuscripts accepted by the Journal of Limnology to describe datasets:

The deadline for submissions is 22 October 2022.

Two postdoc positions: modelling/projecting biodiversity-forest-climate dynamics

Dear all,

I would much appreciate help to spread these two adds for postdoc positions in my group.

Note that applicants must not have a PhD at the time of application, but at the time of the decision of employment:

“PhD in… . The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment.”

Thanks for your help,
Tord

Postdoc 1: Biodiversity modelling and scenario analysis

Depending on your expertise, you will develop models for the spatial distribution or dynamics of forest species, or make projections using available models for biodiversity and ecosystem services assuming scenarios. We study how scenarios of socio-economic policy or development, climate change or forest management on different spatial scales (global, EU, landscape) may affect the future delivery of ecosystem services, biodiversity and human wellbeing. We also investigate conflicts and synergies between these, e.g. based on optimization. The work is funded by The Swedish Research Council and the BiodivERsA project BioESSHealth (www.biodiversa.org/1614).

Full add and application:

https://www.slu.se/en/about-slu/work-at-slu/jobs-vacancies/?rmpage=job&rmjob=7086&rmlang=UK

Postdoc 2: Future forest use, biodiversity & climate

You will optimize forestry, conservation and wood use to reach objectives on future forest use, biodiversity, ecosystem services and climate. Available are tools/models to simulate future forest use, species distribution and richness, ecosystem services, and climate, the latter based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). An integrated system is built that will allow identifying/optimizing synergies, trade-offs and compromises in the use of forests to reach objectives for the future. Stakeholders will participate in formulating the objectives, which will account for global, EU and national strategies and policies. The work is mainly funded by the starting ForestValue project SustMultBiomass (https://forestvalue.org/funded-projects-jc-2021/), but will also be linked to other the ongoing projects with partners across Europe.

Project in short: This project will investigate ecological multi-trophic interactions in diversified landscapes and cropping systems using oilseed rape as a model system. It will focus on interactions between herbivores and their natural enemies and how these are influenced by landscape and field diversification, and finally the resulting effects on yield. The long-term goal is to provide better forecasting methods, potential ecosystem services and other benefits to plant protection.
