PhD positions in Umeå

Johan Olofsson and Ellen Dorrepaal, in collaboration with Sara Hallin and Karina Clemmensen in Uppsala, are opening up three PhD-positions, and I hope you will help us spread this information to suitable candidates!

Deadline for application: 14 February 2022

1. PhD position in ecology with focus on carbon cycling in arctic terrestrial ecosystems:

2. PhD position in ecology with focus on plant-soil-microbe interactions in arctic ecosystems:

3. PhD position in ecology with focus on remote sensing of arctic terrestrial ecosystems:

The three positions are part of a large interdisciplinary project that aims to understand and quantify how processes during the arctic winter may be decisive for overall feedbacks from arctic tundra to the global climate. Arctic ecosystems store large amounts of organic carbon in plants and soil. Uptake of carbon by arctic plants is strongly limited by their access to nutrients, especially nitrogen, due to competition by microbes. Year-round carbon and nitrogen balances thus depend the activities of plant and microbial communities and their seasonality. This interdisciplinary project will involve a research team of about eleven senior and postdoctoral scientists, four PhD students and two technical staff. Together, we will advance basic knowledge of plant and microbial activities during the cold season. The project will further assess the environmental drivers and community traits that may be used to up-scale and predict effects of asynchronies on year-round carbon and nitrogen balances of tundra. Position 1 and 2 will be based in Abisko (with course work in Umeå), position 3 in Umeå (with fieldwork in Abisko). More information can be found via the links above. We welcome all applications!

Thanks for your help, and apologies for cross-postings.

Best wishes,

Johan and Ellen

PhD position in soil biology focusing on long-term effects

Hi,

Please help spread the news that we are looking for a PhD student in soil biology focusing on forestry and the molecular ecology of soil fungi.

The project focuses on long-term effects of clear-cutting forestry on forest soils and their capacity to support forest production, carbon sequestration and biodiversity. The PhD project is part of a larger collaborative project and will specifically study how soil fungi and their functional properties are affected by forestry in a long time perspective. The latest molecular techniques will be used to compare fungal traits and roles in soil carbon and nutrient cycling between intensely managed and less impacted forests.

Call for nominations for 2022 GBIF Young Researchers Awards

Good morning, GBIF colleagues,

I wanted to alert you that we've released the call for nominations for the 2022 GBIF Young Researchers Awards:

https://www.gbif.org/news/6PzaBymtwAEvbpXYtb4d1y/

Note that both the artwork and the call are available in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese (machine-translated and lightly reviewed by non-native speakers in the case of French and Portuguese). As always, we can refine or make additional translations available with your help, should you wish it.

Also, please note that we will shortly prepare and share with you a Google Slide announcing the call. We think this is the most efficient means of providing you with a flyer to adapt with local modifications and translations and distribute to your academic partners—the idea being that they can then print and post the flyer on bulletin boards where your national candidate pool of students will see it. We'd welcome your input and feedback on this as we try to help you extend the awards' reach.

All best,

Kyle

2-year post-doctoral scholarship on arctic plant-fungal interactions

Dear all,

We are looking for a post-doc to come and work with us within a project exploring how expanding subarctic shrubs and trees interact with ectomycorrhizal fungi under climatic changes. The post doc’s project focuses specifically on how these plant-fungal interactions effect plant functional trait responses to climate change and may regulate tundra ecosystem functioning.

The work is based in the Forest Vegetation Ecology group at the Department of Forest Ecology and Management | Externwebben (slu.se), SLU, Umeå. The post-doc will work with Maja Sundqvist (Maja Sundqvist | Externwebben (slu.se) ) as main advisor, and Michael Gundale (Michael Gundale | Externwebben (slu.se)) and Zsofia Stangl (Zsofia Réka Stangl | Externwebben (slu.se)) as co-advisors, in a collaborative team of researchers at the department, within Sweden and USA. The project involves both laboratory and experimental field work, data analysis and manuscript writing. All field work is based from the Abisko Scientific Research station and the Latnjajaure Field Station in northern Sweden.

Form of position: The position is funded as a research scholarship (stipend) paid bi-annually over two years from the Kempe Foundation. The stipend equates to 25,000 kr (Swedish kronor) per month tax free. For more information about this stipend position, please contact Maja Sundqvist.

Starting date: The starting date is flexible but earliest March 2022.

Duration: This post doc scholarship runs for 2 years.

Qualifications: We seek a motivated and enthusiastic person with good communication skills in English, both written and verbal, with a PhD in plant and soil microbial ecology, plant- and/or ecophysiology, biogeochemistry or related fields. We seek a person who can work well within a diverse team of collaborators as well as independently. Previous experience with field and lab work, including in remote locations, and with isotopic labelling (13C and 15N) is highly desirable, as is a driver’s license.

How to apply: Please send 1) a Cover letter stating your research background and interests, and why you are applying for this scholarship, 2) a CV including a list of your publications, 3) a copy of PhD certificate, and 4) a minimum of three references and their contact information to Maja Sundqvist (maja.sundqvist@slu.se) before February 25, 2022.

Please help us spread the word to colleagues you think might be interested in this position!

Best wishes,

Maja

PhD-student position at SLU – Ecosystem effects of reed as feed for husbandry animals

PhD-student – Ecosystem effects of reed as feed for husbandry animals

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is looking for a person with a master's degree in biology (especially ecology), agronomy, environmental science, sustainable development or similar for employment as PhD-student for 4 years.

Due to high nutrient loading and reduced grazing, reeds have expanded along coasts and lakes. This project will explore how harvesting and removal of reed affects the associated ecosystem, mainly fish, submerged plants (macrophytes) and birds. The project also intends to investigate the quality of harvested reed as a feed for husbandry animals (cows and horses), as a way to recirculate nutrients from the sea and lakes back into animal production.

The project is broad and includes a combination of fieldwork, laboratory studies, and experiments with cows and horses. Field studies will examine how fish, macrophytes and birds respond to reed harvesting and removal. Nutritional content of reeds will be evaluated in laboratory studies, and feed utilization will be studied in experiments with cows and horses. An important aspect of the project is the systems perspective in which the individual results will be put into a larger context of nutrient recycling, feed production and ecosystem status.

Deadline January 31, 2022. Apply, and find more info on:
