Soon time to renew your Swedish Oikos membership!

The end of the year is coming up, and those of you whose Swedish Oikos membership expires at the end of this year can expect to receive an automatic renewal reminder next week. Some useful information:

  1. All membership payments should be made through the new payment platform, not the old PG account number.
  2. If you know that your membership will expire at the end of the year but you do not receive a reminder, please check your junk mail folder. The reminder might end up there.
  3. If you are not sure when your membership expires and would like to know, feel free to send me a message and I can check for you.
  4. We have now re-introduced the 5-year membership option! The price per year is the same as for 5 yearly memberships, so the main advantage of the 5-year option is that it saves time by reducing the number of renewal payments you have to make.

Have a nice weekend!

This course is intended for PhD students interested in exploring ecological processes in agricultural production systems and how they relate to agronomic practices. A brief introduction into relevant ecology concepts, will be followed by special focus on ecosystem processes which influence crop production level and stability (e.g., nutrient cycling, pollination, herbivory, predation), and the biodiversity that drives these processes above and below ground, and how these shape crop yield.

The course will challenge participants to consider how these organisms are affected by crop management, and how the ecosystem functions they generate vary across space and time. Where appropriate we will introduce aspects of global climate and other changes, which set the context for what we do and what we face. We will further discuss how ecological principles can be employed in the development of crop production systems to improve efficiency and sustainability of agriculture.

How: Two course parts:

Fw: Plant Community Ecology Position at Stony Brook University

Dear All,

I was asked to disseminate the attached ad for a community ecologist position at Stony Brook University. Please go ahead and apply if you are interested!

Best regards,
Gyuri Barabas

PS: I was also given the disclaimer below about the scope of the search.
This new search comes as part of a university-wide focus on resilient coastal communities and critical infrastructure. We seek an established scholar with at least four years of independent research experience and an active research program focused on the interaction of plants with their environment. This is a more senior position than a typical search and (barring unusual circumstances or career paths) people currently in postdoctoral positions would be considered too junior.

Sent: den 2 november 2021 15:55
To: Bagchi, Robert <robert.bagchi@uconn.edu>
Subject: Quantitative ecologist position at UConn EEB

Dear all,

Please forgive this out-of-the-blue email. We are advertising for a tenure-track quantitative ecologist assistant professor in the department here at UConn EEB.  As part of our advertising strategy, we are trying to get the word out to a large number of quantitative biologists – hence this email. I’d be really grateful if you could circulate the advert around your networks  and to any early-career quantitative folks you think might be interested.

The text of the advert is below and here is the link for applications. Guidance on the application process is here  - note that we are asking for blinded research, teaching and diversity statements to try and reduce implicit bias in the initial stages of the search.

I am on the search committee, and would be happy to answer any questions candidates might have.

Thanks very much for your help!

Best wishes,

Robi Bagchi

Quantitative Ecologist - Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department, University of Connecticut

Job Summary
The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Connecticut (UConn) is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Quantitative Ecology at the Assistant Professor level. The Department seeks a research scientist who applies and develops innovative quantitative approaches to advance the empirical or theoretical understanding of fundamental ecological questions. We are interested in candidates who understand and predict ecological dynamics and patterns by applying and developing cutting-edge statistics or metrics, writing statistical software, deriving and testing mathematical theory, applying analytical, numerical, or simulation approaches, or addressing the challenges of working with “Big Data”.
