PhD Positions in forest economics and wildlife management modeling in Norway

Dear All,

There are two interesting PhD Positions available in forest economics and wildlife management modeling at the Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences.

PhD position in Wildlife Management

The project aims at developing wildlife population models to be used in a larger context of ecological, economical and societal impacts of alternative land management policies under a changing climate. The candidate will compile information on wildlife ecology and management and build models for future management of wildlife resources. Specifically, the candidate will compile existing data on demographic drivers and management of large herbivores in Scandinavia (i.e. moose, red deer, roe deer, wild boar) as a basis to map interacting, direct and indirect pathways between climate change and population demography. The candidate will also assess climate-mediated changes of herbivore browsing impacts on biodiversity and forestry. The findings will be incorporated in spatial wildlife population models to be used to assess the impacts of different management options under different climate scenarios. The candidate will work in close collaboration with the project’s multi-disciplinary and international team.

The candidate will be supervised by Associate professor Simen Pedersen (HINN, main supervisor), Professor Barbara Zimmermann (HINN), Researcher Cecilie Dyngeland (HINN), and Researcher Oskar Franklin (IIASA, Austria)

Questions about the position or work environment can be directed to associate professor Simen Pedersen, e-mail: simen.pedersen@inn.no

PhD position in Forest and Natural Resource Economics

The central aim of the Ph.D. fellowship is to advance and apply state-of-the-art models of the Norwegian forest sector. These include an equilibrium model of forest growth and yields, timber supply and owner attitudes, biodiversity, industrial processing and consumption of wood products and trade as well as greenhouse gas fluxes. The project is to be used in the evaluation of economic and environmental dimensions of the forest sector in response to select public policy interventions.

The candidate will be supervised by associate professor Hanne Sjølie (HINN), prof. Francisco Aguilar (HINN), Dr. Oskar Franklin (IIASA) and Dr. Cecilie Dyngeland (HINN).

Questions about the position may be addressed to Hanne Sjølie, hanne.sjolie@inn.no

Two post-docs in arctic microbial ecology at SLU

Two post-doc positions in Microbial Ecology are available at the Department of forest mycology and plant pathology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, Sweden. The positions are part of a large interdisciplinary project running 2021-2026 (https://kaw.wallenberg.org/en/research/winter-studies-arctic-yield-new-insights-greenhouse-gas-emissions). The project aims to understand and quantify how processes during the arctic winter may be decisive for overall feedbacks from arctic tundra to the global climate. Plant and microbial ecologists work together with specialists in up-scaling based on drone technology and satellite imaging. The project will benefit from ongoing collaborations between plant ecologists (University of Umeå) and fungal and microbial ecologists (SLU, Uppsala).

We are recruiting two postdoctoral colleagues for the microbial ecology aspects of the project. The holder of position 1 will focus on bacterial and archaeal ecology during the winter, more specifically the temporal dynamics of their functional roles, including the functional communities involved in nitrogen cycling. The holder of position 2 will focus on fungal ecology, particularly how different mycorrhizal communities may play contrasting roles during the winter and across vegetation mosaics.

FW: PhD Offer

---

I am looking for a motivated person to develop her/his PhD with me at EBD-CSIC starting ~ Nov-Dec 2021. The contract will cover 4 years of funding to develop the thesis. The thesis project is related to the EU H2020 SAFEGUARD (https://www.safeguard.biozentrum.uni-wuerzburg.de/) project on pollinator declines and plant-pollinator networks. Hence, the candidate needs to speak English, be good at teamwork, and have a solid quantitative and theoretical ecology understanding, including the use of R or any other programming language.

The working place will be based at EBD (http://www.ebd.csic.es/), located in beautiful Sevilla. You should explore the lab webpage (www.bartomeuslab.com) to understand the lab philosophy. Main tasks will consist of statistical analysis of large databases and collaborating on empirical (i.e. fieldwork) studies.

Requirements:

§  Driving license and an EU Degree in sciences (sensu lato)

§  Able to write and speak in English

§  Experience with any programming language, preferably R

§  Enjoying fieldwork

§  Motivation to learn new things, resilience to failure, and compromise.

To apply for the position send to nacho.bartomeus+safeguard@gmail.com in a single PDF (i) a brief motivation letter where you highlight what could be your main contributions to the project and why do you want to embark on a PhD in the lab, (ii) a short and clear CV highlighting your role in the different items presented, and (iii) the email of two contact people who can provide a reference letter if needed. Judging early career researchers' CVs is difficult, so using short examples of how you handled a particular collaboration is much more useful than saying that you are good at teamwork. The lab adheres to the DORA (https://sfdora.org/) declaration to evaluate candidates, so alternative paths are welcomed.

Due to out of my control contracting policies, candidates with non-EU degrees may not be eligible.

I will start revising CVs and conducting interviews starting 10 September until the position is filled.

I plan to be very involved in this project and I am sure it will be fun and productive!

Nordic Congress of Wildlife Research

Dear all,

We will host the Nordic Congress of Wildlife Research, 21-25 March 2022 in Uppsala.

The congress is organized by the Nordic Board for Wildlife Research and the Nordic Section of Wildlife Disease Association.

The theme of the congress is "Bringing wildlife ecology, health and management together" and we have a very broad concept of wildlife ecology (see the home page).

Therefore, I think that several people outside the "normal wildlife ecology" could be interested to participate and have a presentation.

The home page "nkv2022.se" is open for registration and to submit an abstract.
