Welcome to the PhD course:
Ecology of Agriculture (5 ECTS)
Start in August preparatory work
Topic assignments September 7-11, 2020
Retreat workshop September 14-18, 2020
Please note the new, earlier dead line for applying: June 15 2020
This course is intended for PhD students interested in exploring ecological processes in agricultural production systems and how they relate to agronomic practices. A brief introduction into relevant ecology concepts, will be followed by special focus on ecosystem processes which influence crop production level and stability (e.g., nutrient cycling, pollination, herbivory, predation), and the biodiversity that drives these processes above and below ground, and how these shape crop yield.
The course will challenge participants to consider how these organisms are affected by crop management, and how the ecosystem functions they generate vary across space and time. Where appropriate we will introduce aspects of global climate and other changes, which set the context for what we do and what we face. We will further discuss how ecological principles can be employed in the development of crop production systems to improve efficiency and sustainability of agriculture.
How: Two course parts:
1) a preparatory part with group assignment on a topic within agricultural ecology. The preparatory work can be performed at a distance.
2) One week retreat meeting at Ekenäs Herrgård –Lectures, presentations of topic assignments, hands-on exercises, and workshop to write a final report.
Where: Preparatory part from home department (week 37).
Retreat workshop at Ekenäs Herrgård in Sörmland (week 38).
When: August 1 Reading assignment
August 4 Student topics selected
September 7-11 drafting summaries with feedback from instructors
September 14-18 Retreat course workshop
