Forskar/miljöanalysspecialist i akvatisk ekologi

Hej!

PhD student - Biodiversity

Dear all,

We are recruiting a new PhD candidate, who will study biodiversity in road verges and other linear infrastructure habitats. In particular, the candidate will investigate whether biodiversity-targeted management of road verges benefits pollinating insects and pollination, and will examine to what extent the biodiversity of plans and insects in road verges and other habitats depend on current management or land use history.

For more information, and details on how to apply, see: https://www.slu.se/en/about-slu/work-at-slu/jobs-vacancies/?rmpage=job&rmjob=3848&rmlang=UK.

Please forward this to potentially interested candidates!

Oikos online seminar series?

The board of the Swedish Society Oikos is thinking about starting up an online seminar series. Although inspired by other such initiatives that were started in the wake of the covid-19 pandemic, the idea is for the seminar series to continue indefinitely if successful. We would therefore like feedback from our members to make sure the seminars will be as attractive and interesting as possible!

Date: 15 June 2020 at 11:19:37 CEST

Dear colleagues,

There are 12 postdoc positions opening up within the Blue-Green Biodiversity Initiative at Eawag and WSL (see also https://www.altermattlab.ch/positions/). The initiative is led by Catherine Graham (WSL) and myself, and there is many scientists involved with the projects all being highly synergistic and collaborative. Postdoctoral researchers will be hired to identify drivers of biodiversity patterns and dynamics in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. This effort should provide rapid output and visibility. A second phase and funding of the BGB initiative is foreseen for 2021–2024, and will provide additional postdoctoral opportunities.

Thanks for forwarding this information to potential candidates and please note the relativ short deadline for applications,

Best wishes
Florian

PhD course: Ecology of Agriculture 5ECTS

Welcome to the PhD course:

Ecology of Agriculture (5 ECTS)

Start in August preparatory work

Topic assignments September 7-11, 2020

Retreat workshop September 14-18, 2020

Please note the new, earlier dead line for applying: June 15 2020

This course is intended for PhD students interested in exploring ecological processes in agricultural production systems and how they relate to agronomic practices. A brief introduction into relevant ecology concepts, will be followed by special focus on ecosystem processes which influence crop production level and stability (e.g., nutrient cycling, pollination, herbivory, predation), and the biodiversity that drives these processes above and below ground, and how these shape crop yield.

The course will challenge participants to consider how these organisms are affected by crop management, and how the ecosystem functions they generate vary across space and time. Where appropriate we will introduce aspects of global climate and other changes, which set the context for what we do and what we face. We will further discuss how ecological principles can be employed in the development of crop production systems to improve efficiency and sustainability of agriculture.

How: Two course parts:

1) a preparatory part with group assignment on a topic within agricultural ecology. The preparatory work can be performed at a distance.

2) One week retreat meeting at Ekenäs Herrgård –Lectures, presentations of topic assignments, hands-on exercises, and workshop to write a final report.

Where:     Preparatory part from home department (week 37).

Retreat workshop at Ekenäs Herrgård in Sörmland (week 38).

When:       August 1 Reading assignment

                 August 4 Student topics selected

September 7-11 drafting summaries with feedback from instructors

                 September 14-18 Retreat course workshop

Please see attached course plan for more information

Till minne av Lenn Jerling

Foto: Svante Jerling

Postdoc: Modelling, predicting metacommunity dynamics

Dear all,

I would appreciate help to spread the announcement for this postdoc position.

Modelling and predicting metacommunity dynamics

Duties: You will develop models for spatial metacommunity dynamics of epiphytes or deadwood fungi. We have extensive data on the colonization-extinction dynamics of most metacommunity members in both study systems. The modelling will test for effects of environmental conditions, species interactions, species traits and phylogenies. There is also possibility to do fieldwork. Finally, you will make projections of metacommunity dynamics assuming scenarios. We study how socio-economic policy, climate change or forest management on different spatial scales (global, EU, landscape) may affect the future delivery of ecosystem services and metacommunity structure of different organism groups. The work is funded by The Swedish Research Council and by Formas.
