[Oikos-listan] Call for nominations opens for 2017 Young Researchers Awards

Hi All,

GBIF is inviting nominations for the 2017 Young Researchers Awards, with the focus on publication of datasets that give rich information on species observed or collected in particular sampling events.

The GBIF Young Researchers Awards is an annual programme aimed at fostering innovative research and discovery in biodiversity informatics. Working closely with GBIF national Participants, the 2017 awards will provide €5,000 prizes recognizing the work of two graduate students—one a master's candidate and one a PhD candidate—nominated by GBIF Participant countries.

In previous years, the YRAs have sought to encourage innovative uses of biodiversity data mobilized through the GBIF network. Building on recent updates to the Darwin Core standard that powers GBIF, the 2017 awards will recognize the best proposals to mobilize and share new sampling-event datasets through GBIF.org.

These fundamental datasets from ecological researchers contain key information on the presence or absence and abundance of species, and provide the richest resource for modeling biodiversity patterns and for detecting changes and trends in populations. They provide a critical tool for understanding the prospect and pace of widespread global change.

Read more about the 2017 Young Researchers Awards at https://demo.gbif.org/news/83210/call-for-nominations-opens-for-2017-young-researchers-awards and see attachment.

Full description of the opening

Postdoc position in process-based modelling of plant-plant and plant-environment interactions

Food security and sustainable use of resources are central to the United Nations Sustainable Developmental Goals by 2030. Improved management of agroecosystems and available resources will be necessary to meet these challenging goals. Among management practices, increasing the diversity of crop systems has been suggested as a way to enhance productivity, increase resource use efficiency and resilience to environmental fluctuations, and decrease the frequency of pests and disease outbreaks. To exploit in full this possibility, it is necessary to determine the mechanisms promoting positive plant-plant and plant-environment interactions, as well as identify the most suitable plant mixtures for specific pedo-climatic conditions and potential breeding targets.

We seek a highly motivated postdoc to work with process-based models, to establish predictive understanding of ideal plant mixtures in agriculture for high and stable crop yields, efficient resource use, reduction of losses due to biotic and abiotic stresses, and provision of ecosystem service. This position will be associated with the project “DIVERSify – Designing InnoVative plant teams for Ecosystem Resilience and agricultural Sustainability“, funded within the EU Horizon 2020 framework (www.plant-teams.eu).

The postdoc will be based at the Department of Crop Production Ecology in Uppsala. The research conducted within the Department generally aims at improving crop productivity and sustainability. The Department is part of the Ecology Center, which offers a stimulating research environment. The location in Uppsala facilitates further collaborations with researchers at Uppsala University, Stockholm University and KTH.

Duties:

The project will focus on developing, evaluating, and applying mathematical and stochastic methods for the assessment of plant-plant and plant-environment interactions, in arable systems and grasslands. The work will include the use of existing crop models and the development of novel process-based mathematical models, as well as analyses of eco-physiological, environmental and climatic (e.g. time series analyses and meta-analyses).

Qualifications:

Applicants shall hold a PhD in ecology, earth and environmental sciences, agronomy, biology, mathematics, or related fields. Applicants shall also have research experience and interest in eco-hydrological or crop models (coupling plants, ecosystems, and environmental conditions). Previous experience with crop models like APSIM and Daisy is a merit. The applicant should have a demonstrated ability to independently initiate, conduct, and complete research projects and to generate and publish the findings in international peer-reviewed journals. The candidate must have strong written and oral communication skills in English, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and presentations at professional meetings. A working knowledge of MatLab, R, or other computational environments is a merit.

Place of work: Uppsala

Form of employment: Temporary employment as postdoc for two years.

Extent: 100%

Starting date: By agreement

Application: We welcome your application marked with Ref no. SLU ua 2017.2.5.1-2105.

Please submit your application to the Registrar of SLU, P.O. Box 7070, SE-750 07 Uppsala, Sweden or registrator@slu.se no later than June 20, 2017.

Specific documents to be attached:

The application package shall include i) a short letter of motivation, highlighting current research interests and other activities of relevance for the position; ii) curriculum vitae; iii) publication list; iv) a two-page research statement and vision; v) the names and contact information of at least two professional references familiar with the applicant's qualifications; and vi) copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records. It is preferable that the documents i)-iv) are submitted in English.

Ph.D. opportunity in plant evolutionary biology

Nicolaus Copernicus University, Torun, Poland

The Chair of Ecology and Environment Protection
(http://www.keib.umk.pl/?lang=en) is recruiting PhD student interested
in studying evolution of morphological traits in plants at various
time scales. The goal of this project is to contribute towards an
understanding of how genetic architecture (the structure of genotype
to phenotype mapping) affects the evolution of quantitative traits.
According to quantitative genetics theory, the evolution of phenotypic
traits depends on the strength of selection and the amount of genetic
variation. However, part of this variation maybe constrained by
correlations with other traits that are under conflicting selective
regimes. In consequence, the ability to respond to selection
(evolvability) may be limited, even if a trait has high heritability.
However, the extent to which genetic architecture limits phenotypic
evolution remains an open question. Likewise, it is unknown whether it
affects evolution at the short time scale and is easily overcome by
selection, or if the genetic architecture is an important long-term
determinant of the direction of evolution. In this project we aim to
answer these questions using two plant species from the family
Apiaceae, Daucus carota and Ferula communis, as a model system.

This project will be carried out in collaboration with Prof. Thomas
Hansen (University of Oslo) and dr Krzysztof Bartoszek (Uppsala
University).

Major tasks:

phylogenetic analysis of various taxa from the family Apiaceae based
on RADseq data

establish a database of phenotypic traits (seedlings, fruits,
inflorescences and flowers), life history strategies and geographic
distributions for species from the family Apiaceae

estimate the rate of morphological trait evolution using phylogenetic
comparative methods

help in developing the R package mvSLOUCH dedicated to analysis of
multivariate Ornstein-Uhlenbeck models on phylogeny

The ideal candidate will have a background in molecular
biology/population genetics/phylogenetics, as well as experience
working with Linux and modern programming languages such as R.
Previous experience in generating and analysis of next-generation
sequencing data will be considered positively. A condition of the
application is a Master

degree (or equivalent) in biology or similar subjects.

The stipend for both positions is 3 000 PLN net monthly (app. 700
EURO) for three years. The living cost in Torun is low. For example, a
room in a student house (inc. Wi-Fi, kitchen, heating, hot water) is
app. 100-150 EURO monthly, loaf of bread 0.5 EURO, beer 0.5-0.7 EURO,
beer in pub 1-2 EURO, dinner in restaurant 5-8 EURO.

Nicolaus Copernicus University is located close to the medieval center
of Torun (http://www.visittorun.pl/) which is listed among UNESCO
World Cultural and Natural Heritage sites. Torun is a dynamic academic
city and provides many opportunities for intellectual and cultural
stimulation. The Vistula river runs through town and is ideal for the
naturalists as many natural protected areas are located in its valley.

If you are interested, please send a CV, a short statement of your
research interests (max. one page) and the contact details of at least
one academic referee to Marcin Piwczynski (piwczyn@umk.pl). Feel free
to contact him by email for further information. Review of applicants
will start in the first week of August 2017. The positions will stay
open until filled.
