Second call for data papers describing datasets on vectors of human diseases

TDR, the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases hosted at the World Health Organization, GigaScience Press and GBIF have announced a second call for authors to submit Data Release papers on vectors of human disease for inclusion in a thematic series published in GigaByte Journal.

This call builds on the first part of the series, which mobilized more than 500,000 occurrence records and 675,000 sampling events from more than 50 countries.

Vector-borne diseases account for about one quarter of all infectious diseases. Although there has been significant progress for malaria, with a recent decrease in malaria morbidity and mortality rates, this progress is currently halting. Other diseases, such as those caused by arboviruses like dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever and more recently Zika, are expanding, with an increased number of cases and fatalities.

The necessity for developing new vector control strategies, approaches and tools was recognized through the Global Vector Control Response approved by the World Health Assembly in 2017. Among the mutually agreed objectives between GBIF and TDR is to work on a repository of data related to vectors and support design and identification of sources and contacts for data mobilization campaigns to improve data coverage to help research on human health. Within the framework of this collaboration, GigaByte will support a second issue on data papers on vectors.

The data papers submitted should describe datasets with the following criteria:

  • Data has clear relevance for research on vectors of human vector-borne diseases
  • Dataset contains more than 5,000 records that are new to GBIF.org in 2022-23, along with high-quality data and metadata
  • Data is dedicated to the public domain under an open CC0 designation

The call for manuscripts will be open until 30 April 2023.

The article processing fee will be waived for 15 papers, provided that the publications are accepted and meet the above criteria.

Postdoc in forest modeling – from ecology to improved silviculture

Dear All,

There is a postdoc position in Forest modeling available with SLU Forest Ecology and Management in Umeå in Sweden in collaboration with IIASA in Austria.

 

This modeling work is a central component of the project "Science for enhanced forest productivity", which aims to improve forest management based on a better understanding of the eco-physiological underpinnings of tree growth and forest management methods. Findings from empirical studies are incorporated in our model, which is based on the eco-physiological processes: photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration, and nutrient uptake. To predict how all the processes in a tree are coordinated, we use the concept of eco-evolutionary optimality. At the larger scale we will also address forest stand dynamics and the effects of tree species selection and diversity. The model will be used to predict how tree growth and ecosystem-processes respond to climate change, rising CO2 and new management practices.  

Ultimately, our results should be used to guide the adaptation of forest management to climate change and societal demands. For example, which tree species and forest age structure support high resilience and productivity in the future climate? How can precision fertilization and new site preparation methods maximize tree survival and growth? What are the consequences of alternative management strategies for carbon sequestration and biodiversity?  

The position will be based at SLU in Umeå. In addition, you will have the opportunity to visit the main supervisor Oskar Franklin at IIASA in Austria. IIASA is a leading institute for global change research and systems modeling and an important collaborator for SLU.

We have two open postdoc positions which offer excellent career opportunities for ambitious population modelers. We are looking for candidates with a background in quantitative ecology, statistics, data science, applied mathematics or a related field. Both postdocs are fully funded by the Swiss NSF. They are originally for two years, but extensions are possible. In the first postdoc position, the successful candidate will model territory occupancy data to learn about dispersal and demography in raptors and owls. In the second postdoc position, my collaborator Trevor Hefley and I are looking for a candidate to develop ecological diffusion models to learn about dispersal and demography in bird populations distributed in continuous space, using ornitho/eBird-type of citizen-science data. 

Both postdocs will work in the Population Biology group of Michael Schaub and Marc Kéry at the Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach, Switzerland. Senior lecturer in Ecology at Karlstad University

A permanent position as Senior lecturer in Ecology is open at Karlstad University, Sweden

Karlstad University is searching an for an enthusiastic new colleague, who wants to work in the field  of Ecology, with a focus on plants and vegetation, and who does work that complements the research conducted within the River Ecology and Management research group (RivEM).

 

The main duties will be teaching and research. Teaching primarily consist of bachelor’s courses in Biology, as well as relevant master’s courses such as Landscape Ecology, Conservation Biology and/or Evolutionary Biology. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research that complements the current research being conducted within RivEM, and supervise doctoral students in the field of Ecology. We expect the senior lecturer to initiate new externally funded research projects, in collaboration with colleagues in the research group RivEM. There are also opportunities to collaborate with the research group SMEER, focused in subject-specific education research.
