Subject: Open positions in my lab

Dear colleagues,

I would greatly appreciate, if you could help spread the word about two positions (one PhD and one Postdoc) for highly motivated candidates in my lab. Both projects are part of international consortia funded by the EU BiodivERsA program and have excellent collaborators.

Note: The deadline for both positions is 1 February 2021.

In short, they will follow up on two papers which we published in PNAS earlier this week:

https://www.pnas.org/content/118/2/e2002545117

https://www.pnas.org/content/118/2/e2002557117

PhD position in Arctic global change biology

The position is part of the international ASICS Project (https://www.coldregioninvasives.com/). The candidate will do fieldwork in Greenland as part of long-term monitoring programs and analyse time series data on phenology and community dynamics of plants and invertebrates.

https://phd.tech.au.dk/for-applicants/apply-here/february-2021/climate-change-and-long-term-shifts-in-phenology-and-community-dynamics-of-arctic-plants-and-arthropods/

Postdoc in alpine plant-pollinator interactions studied by computer vision and deep learning

The position is part of the international RangeX project (https://www.mountaininvasions.org/rangex). The candidate will use time lapse cameras to record flower visitation rates in local and range-expanding species across multiple mountain ranges and will join a team of biologists and engineers to analyse the images using computer vision and deep learning.

Thanks in advance!

Best wishes,

Toke

updatering Tankesmedjan Oikos / update Think Tank Oikos

Mattias Karlssons tankesmedja ”Oikos” i namntvist | Aftonbladet

www.aftonbladet.se

Dear members in the Swedish Society Oikos,

I wish to inform you about what we have done to protect the name "Oikos".

As many of you know, an new think tank called "Tankesmedjan Oikos" have been started. This has been getting media attention during the weekend in the program "Min Sanning" on SVT and in Aftonbladet: https://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/a/bnX2Mg/mattias-karlsson-i-namnbrak-med-forskare-arrogant We see this as a problem since there is a risk of mix-up between these organisations.

The board of the Swedish Oikos Society have actively been working with this conflict during the whole year. We have:

 1. Strengthened our rights, by registering the brand "Oikos" at the EU-level. Our brand is registered for Financial activities, informational purposes (including scientific publication) and research. We have thus the exclusive rights to the brand "Oikos" in these areas, and that the new think tank’s use of the brand is thus an infringement (intrång) in our rights.
 2. We have contacted “Tankesmedjan Oikos” and asked them to stop using the name "Oikos" since it is an Infringement of our rights. The first contact was a letter politely asking them to stop using the name Oikos, the latest was a formal letter sent by our law firm December 22 2020.
 3. We have been actively been contacting journalists which resulted in the section in the program "Min Sanning" that will be sent on svt this Sunday, they interview the funder of the thinktank Matthias Karlsson and the above mentioned article in Aftonbladet.

We are looking forward to discuss this process with any member during the annual meeting 10 February 2021.

Johan Olofsson, president of the Swedish Society Oikos.

Jessica Abbott, secretary/treasurer for the Swedish Society Oikos.
