On the 1st of September, we will have a Symposium on Megafauna and Earth System Functioning at SLU in Umeå. This symposium is linked to the PhD defense of Olli Hyvärinen, which is planned for the 2nd of September, and focuses on the consequences of losing the world's largest terrestrial mammalian herbivores for earth system function.
The world is experiencing a major megafauna (large mammals and birds) extinction crisis. We increasingly realize that through this crisis we are not only losing biodiversity but also the crucial roles that these megafauna play in ecosystem and earth system functioning. Fighting the extinction crisis and restoring megafaunal populations may thus help to fight other major earth-level sustainability challenges such as climate change. In the symposium, we will have leading scientists from around the world talking about diverse aspects of the links between Megafauna and Earth System Functioning.
Please see attached program and feel welcome in Umeå on the 1st of September!
