We are recruiting two doctoral students in Ecology to a research project that seeks to aid the understanding of consequences of future climate change.
1) Microbial ecology of Baltic Sea sediments
2) Evolutionary ecology of Baltic Sea organisms in the face of climate change

Deadline January 8th, 2021.
Two doctoral student positions in Ecology at Linnaeus University, Kalmar
Linnaeus University is a modern, international university in the Småland region of Sweden. For more information see: Lnu.se
The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as zoonotic ecology.
The overall research project is in the microbiology of Baltic Sea sediments that have been exposed to 50 years of warming to aid in the understanding of future climate change. The techniques used in these studies will include combinations of observational and experimental manipulation studies both in the field and laboratory along with ‘omics’ approaches to investigate community and species-level responses and activities. The project is supported by grants from Vetenskapsrådet and Formas.
Position 1 - Microbial ecology of Baltic Sea sediments. The research will focus on the ability of microbial species to adapt and cope with increased temperatures. It will be tested if long-term increased temperature selects an altered sediment community and activity compared to control sediments; how elevated temperatures affect Baltic Sea productivity plus cycling of nutrients and greenhouse gases; and if elevated temperatures result in increased hypoxic/anoxic waters.
Position 2 - Evolutionary ecology of Baltic Sea organisms in the face of climate change. The research will focus on microbes, zooplankton, and biofilms as key players in nutrient cycling and the ability of species to adapt and cope with increased temperatures. It will be tested how Baltic Sea communities alter and/or adapt after long-term warming and to what extent the shifts due to climate change are reversible if original conditions are restored.
Admission subject
The studies carried out in the respective projects are designed to lead to a PhD in Ecology
Placement city
Kalmar, Sweden
Job description
The positions will be for four years. In addition, an appointee may work to a limited extent with education, research, artistic development, and administration to a maximum of 20% of a full-time post.
Requirements
A person fulfils the general entry requirements if he/she
· has been awarded a degree on second-cycle level
· completed the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which 60 credits on second-cycle level, or
· in another way, in Sweden or abroad, has acquired principally equivalent knowledge.
Specific requirements also include
· knowledge in the field of environmental microbiology for position 1 and environmental microbiology and/or evolutionary ecology for position 2
· a high proficiency in written and spoken English
· be able to solve problems
· have the ability to work independently as well as interact well in a research group.
Assessment grounds
· experience of microbiology field work and with nucleic acid extraction from microorganisms as well as interpretation of genomic data would place the candidates at an advantage
· experience of working with aquatic/marine microbiology (position 1) or marine microbes and/or zooplankton or biofilms (position 2)
· we attach great importance to personal suitability.
