Postdoc: Biodiversity modelling and scenario analysis

Dear all,

I would appreciate help to spread the ad for this postdoc position.

Biodiversity modelling and scenario analysis

Duties: Depending on your expertise, you will developing models for the spatial distribution or dynamics of forest species, or make projections using available models for biodiversity and ecosystem services assuming scenarios. We study how scenarios of socio-economic policy or development, climate change or forest management on different spatial scales (global, EU, landscape) may affect the future delivery of ecosystem services, biodiversity and human wellbeing. We also investigate conflicts and synergies between these, e.g. based on optimization. The work is funded by Formas and our ERA Net projects BioESSHealth (www.biodiversa.org/1400) and Multiforest.

***SPAM*** Two doctoral student positions in Ecology at Linnaeus University for research on consequences of climate change

We are recruiting two doctoral students in Ecology to a research project that seeks to aid the understanding of consequences of future climate change.

1) Microbial ecology of Baltic Sea sediments

2) Evolutionary ecology of Baltic Sea organisms in the face of climate change

Apply via the link found at: https://lnu.se/en/meet-linnaeus-university/work-at-the-university/

Deadline January 8th, 2021.

Two doctoral student positions in Ecology at Linnaeus University, Kalmar

Linnaeus University is a modern, international university in the Småland region of Sweden. For more information see: Lnu.se

The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as zoonotic ecology.

The overall research project is in the microbiology of Baltic Sea sediments that have been exposed to 50 years of warming to aid in the understanding of future climate change. The techniques used in these studies will include combinations of observational and experimental manipulation studies both in the field and laboratory along with ‘omics’ approaches to investigate community and species-level responses and activities. The project is supported by grants from Vetenskapsrådet and Formas.

Position 1 - Microbial ecology of Baltic Sea sediments. The research will focus on the ability of microbial species to adapt and cope with increased temperatures. It will be tested if long-term increased temperature selects an altered sediment community and activity compared to control sediments; how elevated temperatures affect Baltic Sea productivity plus cycling of nutrients and greenhouse gases; and if elevated temperatures result in increased hypoxic/anoxic waters.

Position 2 - Evolutionary ecology of Baltic Sea organisms in the face of climate change. The research will focus on microbes, zooplankton, and biofilms as key players in nutrient cycling and the ability of species to adapt and cope with increased temperatures. It will be tested how Baltic Sea communities alter and/or adapt after long-term warming and to what extent the shifts due to climate change are reversible if original conditions are restored.

Postdoctoral fellow in landscape ecotoxicology

Dear all,

The Department of Biology is seeking a postdoctoral fellow in landscape ecotoxicology, with a focus on bumble bees and other bees. The postdoc will work in the project “Exposure and Effects of Chemical Mixtures on Bees (MixToxBee) - Supporting Pesticide Monitoring and Bee Risk Assessment”. The project aims to quantify bees’ exposure to pesticide mixtures and evaluate effects on individual bees and bee populations, using experiments and modelling. The outcome is relevant for monitoring pesticide residues in terrestrial environments, which is currently lacking, and ecological risk assessment of chemical mixtures for bees. Pesticide exposure is estimated by quantifying residues in pollen and nectar collected by several bee species and extending bee foraging models to include pesticide use. This data is used to select environmentally relevant mixtures of pesticides for lab and landscape experiments in combination with individual-based modelling on bee individuals, colonies, populations and pollination services.

CeMEB Webinar - Evolution of Species Ranges - Save-the-date!

Here is an invitation for researchers interested in the dynamics of species ranges.
Save the date 8–10 March 2021!

Species re-distributions are already occurring in response to global climate change. Many species migrate to track critical environmental parameters such as their optimal temperature range. Migrations of populations to new areas come with challenges. Both evolutionary and ecological factors play a role in determining the success of the populations' establishment in new areas.

This CeMEB webinar welcomes interested researchers for presentations and discussions on the evolutionary and ecological aspects of the dynamics of species ranges.

Themes

• What are the key evolutionary and ecological factors precluding or facilitating the establishment of species in new geographic areas?
• What management actions could facilitate expansions, shifts and persistence of ranges, or prevent invasive species from expanding their ranges?

Oikos list: postdoct in bryophyte ecology and conservation

A postdoctoral position in bryophyte ecology and conservation over 14 months is available at the Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL, with The Swedish Museum of Natural History as partner institution.

The project is a follow-up to the recently published Red List of European bryophytes (Hodgetts et al. 2019) with the main goal to analyse how intrinsic (i.e. species traits) and extrinsic factors (e.g. habitat destruction) together affect the extinction risk of European bryophytes. Please find relevant information on the position at  https://apply.refline.ch/273855/1098/pub/1/index.html

Please spread this information in your network. We look forward to receiving applications from all over!

Oikos renewal changes 2021

Dear Swedish Society Oikos members,

This year there will be some changes when you renew your membership for 2021.

1.       Renewal payments will be made through the Nordic Society Oikos’ new platform. This means that you need to have access to the platform, and approve its terms and conditions. Please check that you have activated your membership by trying to log in at: https://nordicsocietyoikos.glueup.com/account/login

If you are on the Oikos mailing list but cannot log in, then it is very likely that you have already been added to the platform previously but did not activate your registration. If this is the case, please let me know and I can re-send the activation email. It is better to activate an existing account than to create a new one. Activation is important as otherwise you may not get notification emails that are sent out via the platform (see next point).

2.       Early in December you can expect to receive a renewal message from the platform. Please do not delete this message as it is not spam! Follow the instructions in the email to renew your membership.

3.       Members of the Swedish Society Oikos are also members of the Nordic Society Oikos, and this is a long-standing arrangement. However as of next year the NSO will start collecting a membership fee, in order to continue to be able to provide services to the member societies (such as the platform for our new website and membership management). This means that the total cost of membership for 2021 is increased to 110 SEK (11 EUR) – 50 SEK to the Nordic Society Oikos and 60 SEK as usual to the Swedish Society Oikos.

4.       When paying online you can choose your method of payment, but the membership fee will be collected in Euros rather than SEK. This is necessary to harmonize membership payments across Scandinavia.

5.       We hope to be able to offer a 5-year membership option later on, but for now only 1-year memberships are possible. (We need to make sure any bugs in the system have been worked out before we can implement multi-year memberships.)

Thanks for your support, and have a happy and healthy rest of the year!
