leaders in DNA metabarcoding to visit Umeå

Hej all,

From mid-April to early May two of the leading scientists in DNA metabarcoding will be visiting our department at SLU in Umeå; Prof's Pierre Taberlet (CNRS and Univ of Grenoble) and Eric Coissac (Univ of Grenoble).

Pierre Taberlet is one of founders of the field of DNA metabarcoding and a globally leading conservation geneticist with an h-index of close to 100 and >> 200 publications. Similarly, Eric Coissac, with an h-index of close to 50 and close to a 100 publications thus far, has played a pivotal role in the development of the DNA metabarcoding field, particularly in terms of bio-informatics. Both also run a highly popular metabarcoding summer school each year. They will be visiting our lab as part of a joint project where we use DNA metabarcoding to create novel insights in trophic interactions among Swedish ungulates.

If you are interested in DNA metabarcoding and/or in meeting Pierre and Eric, please note the following activities;

- one-day seminar on DNA metabarcoding on the 18th of April in Aspen, SLU Umeå, with talks on the do's and don'ts of metabarcoding by Pierre and Eric and a series of talks by researchers from Umeå on the use of metabarcoding in their research.

- consultation afternoons: we have blocked the afternoons of 19 and 20 April from 13.00-16.00 where anybody who is interested can book time with Pierre and/or Eric to meet with them. If you are interested in this, please email Robert Spitzer: robert.spitzer@slu.se

Best wishes,

Joris

Oikos list: Sperm race conservation fundraiser

Message from Helen Taylor that may be of interest:

As many of you know, I work on inbreeding and sperm quality in threatened birds. One of my study species, the hihi or stitchbird, is seriously conservation reliant, but also very expensive to manage and chronically underfunded.

Over the 2017/18 breeding season, I collected data on sperm velocity from 128 male hihi. We have now launched the Great Hihi Sperm Race, where we're asking people to place bets on which of these birds they think will have the fastest sperm. You can enter now at http://www.hihispermrace.nz

Bets cost $10 NZD each (~5 UK pounds or $7 USD) and you can bet on as man birds as you like. Whoever picks the bird with the fastest sperm is in to win some fabulous prizes (many of which can be shipped internationally) and all proceeds go directly to hihi conservation via the hihi recovery group.

If you're not into betting, you can also buy Great Hihi Sperm Race t-shirts in our shop - a must-have for any sperm aficionado/geek!

It's a great opportunity to publicise sperm science to a wide audience while raising some much-needed conservation funding.

If you have any questions at all on this, please let me know. All support and publicity is massively appreciated.

I've attached a press release and a poster just in case you have decent media contacts and want to get even more involved!

Thanks!

Helen.

Oikos list: Ecological Field Course in Indonesian Borneo in July 2018

The Borneo Nature Foundation is looking for prospective students to partake in a two-week field course in July 2018.

We are a research and conservation organisation working in Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. Our main study site in the Sabangau Forest is home to the world's largest lowland populations of Bornearn orangutans and southern Bornean gibbons.

We work at the forefront of primate research in tropical forest environments and are affiliated with the University of Palangka Raya and Universitas Muhammadiyah in Kalimantan, and British universities of Oxford Brookes and Exeter. We carry out scientific research on many aspects of orangutan, gibbon and red langur ecology and on tropical peat-swamp forest biodiversity, productivity, regeneration and restoration ecology.

In 2018, students will join us to gain first-hand experience of a tropical forest environment, work alongside enthusiastic researchers, and will receive practical training in field survey skills and biodiversity monitoring during an intensive two-week field course. Topics you will learn about include primate survey methods, peat-swamp ecology, survey methods of ecological indicator species, research and technology and threats and conservation strategies in peat-swamp forest. These two weeks will be an intensive, but exciting and rewarding experience. Students will have the chance to see some of the incredible wildlife that inhabits this special part of the world, including the charismatic orangutan in the wild.

There will be one field course in 2018 in July, with the potential for another course in June, and spaces often fill up quickly so make sure to get your application in soon. If you are interested in receiving credit from your university for the field course, please contact your university individually to discuss further. If your university does accept the course for university credit, BNF will then work together with you and the university to ensure all requirements are met.  Many of our previous volunteers and students have returned to Borneo Nature Foundation as long-term research assistants or have gone on to careers and further research in biodiversity conservation.

To apply and find out more please visit: http://www.borneonaturefoundation.org/en/join/2018-sabangau-field-course/

For regular updates on our fieldwork follow us on FacebookTwitter and Instagram.
