Dear Colleague:

Please help me spread the word about this opportunity, and feel free to let me know if you have any suggestions.

I have posted an announcement at https://mac-theobio.github.io/jd/rabies_pdf.html, and also pasted the same content below.

Thanks for any help,

Jonathan

Rabies research position

The McMaster #theobio group is looking for one or two postdoctoral researchers to analyze and model infectious disease data. The successful candidate will be based at McMaster University, in the group of Dr. Jonathan Dushoff (Department of Biology). The postdoc will join a diverse team and work to analyze data about rabies spread in endemic areas of Asia and Africa, to help pursue the goal of ending canine rabies as a public-health threat. The position is for one year, and can be renewed for a second.

The successful candidate will have strong quantitative, computational and communication skills. Applicants should have experience with dynamical modeling of ecological or infectious disease systems and parameter estimation for statistical models (Bayesian or frequentist).

Review of applications will begin on 1 Feb 2023, and continue until the position is filled. To apply, please e-mail Jonathan Dushoff (dushoff@mcmaster.ca) with a curriculum vitae (CV), a one-page statement of how your research interests and experience relate to this position, and contact information for 3 references.

Please indicate when you are available to start. The target date is the second half of 2023.

McMaster is located in Hamilton, Ontario, less than an hour from both Niagara Falls and from Toronto (and convenient to the latter by public transportation). The campus is large, green and conveniently located.

GBIF Data Use Club Practical Sessions

GBIF Data Use Club Practical Sessions: The API and introduction to rgbif and pygbif

Venue: Online

When: 8 February 2023 15:00 - 16:00

The GBIF API (Application Programming Interface) provides users with the ability to perform more complex data filtering than what is available on the website.

This session will give you an overview of the GBIF API and accompanying documentation. We will also introduce key R and Python packages and their associated functions that provide access to the data via the API. The session is aimed at those just starting to access the data via these channels and those who would like a refresher.

The session will cover the following elements:

  • Introduction to the GBIF API
  • Introduction to rgbif
  • Introduction to pygbif

Register and read more at https://www.gbif.org/event/1tpJPYktwQ8b9B0P0Gzoxs/data-use-club-practical-sessions-the-api-and-introduction-to-rgbif-and-pygbif

FW: SORTEE workshop on using and contributing data to GBIF (Jan 24)

An interesting workshop on data sharing coming up organised by SORTEE:

From: SORTEE <sortecoevo@gmail.com>
Sent: den 11 januari 2023 16:20
Subject: SORTEE workshop on using and contributing data to GBIF (Jan 24)

CAUTION: This email originated from outside of the organization. Do not click links or open attachments unless you recognize the sender and know the content is safe.

Dear SORTEE members,

Happy new year!

SORTEE is hosting its 5th virtual workshop on Jan 24 from 15:00-16:30 UTC. The topic is Using and contributing open data to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF.org). If you would like to attend, please register here.

Workshop summary: GBIF is an international network and data infrastructure funded by the world's governments and aimed at providing anyone, anywhere, open access to data about all types of life on Earth. Many countries and organizations have deployed infrastructures aimed at facilitating publication of biodiversity data on GBIF.

During this workshop, you will learn how you can contribute different types of data to GBIF, providing visibility to your institution/project and allowing others to use data you collected.

You will also discover how you can use GBIF mediated data in your own research and projects. Filtering data from GBIF allows users to generate fit-for-purpose datasets that can then be used for different types of analyses, such as ecological niche modeling and species distributions.

We hope to see you there! Please note that previous and upcoming SORTEE workshops are available on SORTEE's website.

Best wishes,

Dom Roche

SORTEE Past President
