Webinar series on forest insects and Chemical ecology

On behalf of my colleagues, I would like to draw your attention to the above named webinar. The webinar is part of activities organised by working parties within  IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organisations).

Please find below the details for a webinar series hosted by the new Working Party 7.03.16, "Behaviour and chemical ecology of forest insects".  Each seminar includes an introductory talk by an invited seminar leader followed by two research talks and a final open discussion.  The seminars occur every 2 weeks starting September 17 until November 12 and run from 13:30 until 15:00 UTC (this is 9:30 AM EST, 6:30 AM PST and 15:30 CEST).  The seminar series is hosted through the FABI, University of Pretoria academic zoom account and will also stream to a YouTube channel we have created for the WP (this will allow us to post the webinars there and make them available for the community to view if they are unable to attend the webinar).  The webinars are open to all but to join the webinar individuals must register online at the site provided in the flyer, registration triggers an auto response email that provides you with the link to access the seminars and allows us to track participation and limit the risk of unwelcome visitors.

Vacant position as research assistant for biodiversity project

Dear All,

 

We are currently looking for a research assistant to conduct both field and laboratory work in project LIFEPLAN (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/projects/lifeplan). This is a major, six-year initiative funded by the European Research Council (ERC). Every week, year round, as part of a team of four, the technical assistant will conduct multi-scale sampling (see https://www.helsinki.fi/en/node/83770) and targeted experiments in Sweden. When not in the field, the assistant will process samples of different types in Uppsala.

 

The successful candidates should hold a training as e.g. biologist, ecologist or biomedical laboratory analysts. Since they are expected to do both laboratory and field work, we expect previous, documented experience of each type of tasks. To be able to successfully complete their various tasks, the candidate should be able to take initiative and work independently as well as in a team. A driver’s license and at least one year of driving experience are mandatory qualifications and winter driving experience is a plus. We put strong emphasis on personal characters such as collaborative skills.

Project Description
Relationships can be hard work. Indeed, the challenges of maintaining social relationships are widely thought to drive the evolution of large brains and intelligence in humans and other animals such as primates, cetaceans and corvids. This idea, known as the Social Intelligence Hypothesis, has been hugely influential in biology, psychology and anthropology for over 50 years. However, it remains highly controversial and lacks predictive power, largely because it is based on verbal arguments rather than formal models with explicit assumptions. In this PhD, part of the Leverhulme-funded project "The role of social relationships in cognitive evolution" you will develop a novel theoretical framework to analyse whether and under what circumstances social relationships generate cognitive demands and how those demands in turn influence social evolution.
 
By integrating game theoretical approaches with recent advances in the ecology of information use, you will develop mathematical and/or computational models to analyse the implications of evolutionary costs and benefits of tracking information from social partners to make decisions across differing social and ecological conditions. These models will generate explicit predictions of whether and under what circumstances social relationships generate cognitive demands for monitoring and responding to partner behaviour, and how those demands in turn influence social evolution. Predictions from the models will be tested using data from co-supervisor Alex Thornton's long-term field studies of wild corvids and meta-analyses of published data.
 
The successful candidate will be supervised by Dr Sasha Dall and Dr Alex Thornton at the lively research environment of the Centre for Ecology and Conservation, at the University of Exeter's Penryn Campus in Cornwall. Prof, John McNamara FRS (Mathematics: University of Bristol) will be involved with the project as an external partner. You will be an active member of both Thornton's Wild Cognition Research Group, and the wider Behaviour Discussion Group, one of the largest concentration of behavioural biologists in the world.

This award provides annual funding to cover UK/EU tuition fees and a tax-free stipend.  For students who pay UK/EU tuition fees the award will cover the tuition fees in full, plus at least £15,285 per year tax-free stipend.  Students who pay international tuition fees are eligible to apply, but should note that the award will only provide payment for part of the international tuition fee and no stipend.
Entry requirements
Applicants for this studentship must have obtained, or be about to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class UK Honours degree, or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK, in an appropriate area of science or technology (e.g. biology, psychology, mathematics, computer science).  A Master's degree in a related area is desirable.
 
Applicants must have strong mathematical and/or computational skills and research interests in the evolution of cognition and behaviour. Experience of theoretical modelling would be a strong advantage.
 
If English is not your first language you will need to have achieved at least 6.5 in IELTS and no less than 6.0 in any section by the start of the project.  Alternative tests may be acceptable (see http://www.exeter.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply/english/).

SITES ecosystem science data offer

SITES Data Portal provides contextual data for field research projects

SITES (Swedish Infrastructure for Ecosystem Science) is a national infrastructure for field-based ecosystem science. The backbone of SITES are ten research station and three thematic programmes. Data from the stations and the thematic programmes are openly available and published on the SITES Data Portal (https://data.fieldsites.se). 

Currently, the portal holds data on basic meteorological and hydrological parameters (SITES Water) as well as broader biological and chemical data from mesocosm experiments (SITES AquaNet). The portal is continuously being updated with additional datasets. In the coming months an extensive number of datasets related to phenology and plant sciences based on spectral methods (SITES Spectral), physical and chemical properties of streams and lakes (SITES Water) will be uploaded. 

Additionally, SITES is now performing e-DNA analyses on samples from various substrates collected in the vicinity of the research stations. This unique reference material is expected to be made publicly available by the end of the year.

Visit the SITES Data Portal (https://data.fieldsites.se/portal and search the existing data sets by theme, keywords, parameter or unit of measurements. Data is open for use under the Creative Commons CC-BY license, which means you are free to use the data as long as you attribute the source.

SITES (Swedish Infrastructure for Ecosystem Science) is a national infrastructure for terrestrial and limnological field research. SITES aims to promote high-quality research through long-term field measurements and field experiments, and by making data available.
