Oikos list: course in molecular phylogenetics

We are pleased to invite you to attend the GENECO Molecular Phylogenetics Course at Lund University, 13-15 November 2019, led by Prof Niklas Wahlberg & Dr Jadranka Rota.

GENECO is the Graduate Research School in Genomic Ecology at Lund University (https://www.biology.lu.se/education/phd-studies/graduate-research-school-in-genomic-ecology).

This three-day course will provide an introduction to the fundamental principles of building phylogenies using molecular data, as well as the latest techniques and programs in this field. The aims of this course are to introduce the theory and practice of phylogenetic inference from molecular data and to provide an introduction to some of the most used methods and computer programs. The emphasis will be on model-based methods using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference, with a focus on DNA sequences as data. We will introduce programs such as IQTREE, MrBayes, as well as BEAST for timing of divergence analyses. The course will consist of lectures, demonstrations of computer programs, and independent projects on fully analysing an example dataset (either your own or given by the lecturer). The course is aimed at PhD students, but is also suitable for motivated masters students and researchers at any stage.

Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment

The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment (www.slu.se/aquatic-sciences) is working with applied environmental science, with a national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to water chemistry, pollution and aquatic biota. The Department has some 100 employees. The research focuses on geochemical and hydrological processes, aquatic ecology and biodiversity, as well as on aquatic ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry.

Duties:

We are looking for a Postdoctor to conduct research within the ARCTIC-BIODIVER project, with partners in the US, Canada, Denmark / Greenland, Norway and Sweden. The project aims to understand how organism communities, food webs, and ecosystem services in Arctic lakes and rivers are changing in a warmer climate.

The post-doc is expected to initiate, plan and lead research, write scientific articles and supervise graduate students.

Qualifications:

As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates with a doctoral degree that is three years old at most.

The applicant must hold a PhD in aquatic ecology or equivalent, preferably with a profile in Arctic ecosystems and their food webs. You will also have documented experience of how stable isotopes and lipids are applied in food web research, of experimental studies, and of work in Arctic/alpine environments. Good skills in oral and written communication in English are required, as well as a valid driver's license. Previous postdoc experience is a merit. Great emphasis is placed on personal qualities such as good cooperative ability.

Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their scientific potential and achievements, motivation for the proposed research, and the criteria outlined above.

The application must include CV, diploma, publication list, and a cover letter that includes your motivation for the position.

Postdoctoral position in Coastal Community Ecology

The Department of Aquatic Resources conducts environmental analysis, scientific advice, research and education in aquatic ecology with a focus on fish and shellfish. The department is SLU's largest and has just over 180 employees at three main locations: Lysekil, Öregrund and Stockholm (Drottningholm), as well as four field stations.

Our operations are strongly profiled towards data collection and analysis of fish and fisheries and ecosystems. The institution is characterized by intensive collaboration with the surrounding society. This creates a vital research environment and gives us unique opportunities to develop knowledge that is close to management and directly applicable in practice.

Description:

We are seeking a dedicated postdoctoral fellow to study the role of benthic and pelagic energy transfer pathways to fish in coastal waters by combining comparative field studies, analyses of isotope data and experiments. Specific questions to be addressed in the project include how shifts in the balance between benthic and pelagic production may affect food web structure and fish biomass production and how the relative efficiency of manipulating nutrient loading and fish biomass in mitigating eutrophication symptoms vary across water color and nutrient gradients.

This position provides an opportunity to contribute both to novel understanding about the role of light limitation for ecosystem structure and function, as well as knowledge needed to better manage coastal water quality and fish communities. Not only will you collaborate with the group of researchers involved in the project (involving researchers at SLU, Umeå, Lund and Stockholm University), but also be part of a dynamic research group (www.slu.se/fishinfoodwebs) working on dynamics of fish communities and aquatic food-webs, and their ecological and evolutionary responses to climate change, exploitation and other human pressures.

Duties:

Your two primary tasks are (i) to analyze how coastal food webs in general, and fish communities specifically, respond to light and biogeochemical gradients along the Baltic Sea coast using already collected data ranging from primary production to fish community metrics and (ii) to set up and carry out a field experiment to study energy flows and the relative role of bottom-up and top-down control in coastal food webs under light and/or nutrient limitation. There are also possibilities to participate in other related research, by aiding in other projects in the group and mentoring of undergraduate students.

Qualifications:

Documented skills in and experience of aquatic community ecology are required. Expertise in and experience of experimental ecology, community ecology theory and fish ecology are advantageous. Expertise and knowledge in biogeochemistry are considered a merit. You are fluent in spoken and written English, a good collaborator and have good communication skills. We place great emphasis on personal qualities such as ability to work in teams as well as independently.
