Phenological shifts, i.e. changes in the timing of seasonal events, are well-documented effects of climate change, with potentially large impact on nature and society. These effects include biodiversity conservation, spread of invasive species and conditions for growth, pests or frost damage in agriculture and forestry, as well as on human health (allergies). The goal of the symposium is to discuss how deliverables from phenology research and data monitoring may be used by stakeholders in their planning and decision-making, and by the general society for discovery and adaption to a changed climate.

The symposium is organized by the Swedish National Phenology Network (SWE-NPN), as a joint effort of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (head organization of SWE-NPN) and the Lund and Gothenburg Universities, through the BECC consortium (Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate).

Post doc scholarship: climate change and forest insects

We are looking for a postdoc to the project “Effects of climate change on forest insects – consequences on conservation strategies and pest management”. The post doc period is 2 years, funded by a tax free post doc scholarship from Carl Tryggers Foundation.

Project description

Climate change will have vast effects on biodiversity and pest management. So far most analyses of these effects have been at a coarse-grained scale, but recently it has been shown that the fine-grained climatic heterogeneity is important. We will collect new field data including both local and regional climatic gradients by surveys of one species of conservation concern (a cerambycid beetle Tragosoma depsarium) using pheromone traps and experiments on an important pest species (spruce bark beetle Ips typographus). The data will be used to assess how forest insect species are affected by climate by modelling abundances with climate and habitat variables and their interactions at multiple spatial scales. We will use the obtained models to predict the amount of available habitat given different climate scenarios.

Organisation
The project will be conducted at the Department of Ecology of SLU in Uppsala. At the Department of Ecology in Uppsala we conduct research for sustainable forest and agricultural production and efficient biological conservation. We study the influence of land use and climate on animals, plants, soils nutrient status, and greenhouse gas balances. Solutions are sought that will mitigate climate change, preserve threatened species, benefit biological diversity and ecosystem services, and control pests in forest and agricultural landscapes as well as in urban areas. The post doc will be supported by a research team with complementary competences:

Thomas Ranius (https://www.slu.se/en/cv/thomas-ranius/), main host, professor in conservation biology. His main research interest is landscape ecology in forests, and many of his studies have focused on dead-wood dependent insects.

Martin Schroeder, professor in forest entomology. His main research interest is population dynamics and pest management, especially of bark beetles.

Erik Öckinger, associate professor in ecology. Since one of his main research interests are consequences of climate change on biodiversity, he has experience from combining climatic data and spatial patterns of biodiversity.

Mattias Larsson, associate professor in chemical ecology. He is developing techniques for monitoring insects with pheromones.

Merits
The applicant should hold a Ph D in ecology (or in a similar relevant subject, such as forest science or entomology), preferably achieved within the last five years. Experience from at least one of the relevant research fields (species’ responses to climate, forest pest management, conservation biology, population ecology) is required, and experience from both applied and basic aspects of ecology is a merit. Experience from the relevant ecosystem (forest, dead wood, insects) and extensive experiments and field surveys as well as work with GIS and a solid experience of statistical analyses are also meriting. A strong publication record (in relation to the time since dissertation) is a merit. Strong communication skills in English (both written and oral) are required. The candidate is expected to be capable and willing to take initiative and work independently as well as in a team. Field work will take place in multiple locations in Sweden, and a driving license is therefore required.

Access: 1 April, or by agreement. Please indicate possible starting date in your application. The scholarship from Carl Tryggers Foundation is totally 552 000 SEK (over 2 years).

I recently started as a full professor at the Chair of Applied Vegetation Ecology at the University of Freiburg, Germany (www.ecology.uni-freiburg.de). My research assistant Stefan Kaufmann (formerly Graz and Goettingen), who is skilled in bryophytes and lichens, and me (lichens) want to continue working on topics related to lichen and bryophyte ecology and diversity on our new positions.

We are currently looking for a PhD candidate, who would be interested to work on the diversity of epiphytic lichens and bryophytes in the Black Forest, south-western Germany. The aim of our planned research is to quantify how retention forestry might help to conserve lichen and bryophyte diversity by sparing selected trees from harvesting across forest generations.

With our study, we want to answer several key questions, which are highly relevant with respect to nature conservation and forest management. Questions we want to address include to what extent old aging trees are capable of significantly increasing the epiphyte diversity of the total forest and if forest connectivity exerts a significant influence on the prospects of success to conserve epiphyte diversity by retention forestry.

We are explicitly interested in candidates from the international lichenological and bryological community and will be able to cover travel costs for interviews. We will be able to hire a candidate from inside or outside the EU. The salary will be c. 45,000 EUR per year, including health insurance and other social benefits. Candidates should have a valid driving license (which would have to be converted into a German driving license after 6 months in the case of non-EU citizens), be able to communicate in English or German and to write their thesis in English. The successful candidate should be skilled in either lichens or bryophytes, but should feel able and willing to familiarize with the other respective group during the project.

The project will take place on existing plots in the scope of a graduate school (www.confobi.uni-freiburg.de), where other candidates will work on other organism groups.
