the Swedish Oikos 2019 conference (4-7 February 2019) is taking shape, and you now have the opportunity to contribute by (i) proposing sessions, (ii) nominating an early career plenary speaker, and (iii) arranging satellite symposia.

(i) Proposing a session

In addition to the six themes already planned (above), we welcome proposals for sessions organized around other topics. The organizing committee will select two proposed sessions to be included in the program. Sessions can be of various formats, of a length of maximum 1.5 hours. Be creative! Proposers commit themselves to evaluating abstracts submitted for the session, should the suggested session be selected for the program.

Note that the sessions shouldn't be habitat- or organisms-based. If you want to arrange such, it is welcome as a satellite symposium (see iii below).

To propose a session, provide a max 1 page description and motivation of the session, and contact details to the organizers that commit themselves to organizing the session and evaluating corresponding abstracts (should it be selected). The subject field of the email should read SESSION PROPOSAL. Email to Oikos2019@slu.se  no later than October 22nd.

(ii) Nominating an early career scientist as plenary speaker

In addition to the plenary speakers already invited (a great list!), you are welcome to nominate an early career scientist whom we will invite to give a plenary lecture. By early career we aim for approximately the final year as a PhD-student or during the first couple of years as postdoc. The nominated candidate should have graduated from, or currently be affiliated with, a Swedish university. The early career scientist chosen for plenary will have the same conditions as other invited plenary speakers, with hotel and travel paid for. Candidates are of course welcome to nominate themselves!

To nominate an early career scientist for plenary talk, provide a short motivation including the broad area that the suggested plenary would be on, attach a key paper by the nominee, and information on the connection to a Swedish university. The subject field of the email should read EARLY CAREER PLENARY PROPOSAL. Email to Oikos2019@slu.se  no later than October 22nd.

(iii) Arranging a satellite symposium

If you want to arrange a satellite symposium in connection to Oikos 2019, you are welcome to do so at SLU Ultuna campus (Uppsala) on the Monday February 4th before the Welcome Reception & Pub in the evening that opens the conference. In that case, please let us know and we can help arrange rooms for the symposia. 

To notify on arrangement of satellite symposium, please send us an email to declare your general interest in arranging a satellite symposium, including title of the symposium, expected number of attendants, and contact details to the organizers of the satellite symposium. The subject field of the email should read SATELLITE SYMPOSIUM. Email to Oikos2019@slu.se  no later than October 22nd.

A Software Carpentry workshop is a hands-on, two-day event that covers the core skills needed to be productive in a small research team. You will build a skill set that will help you use code to replicate operations or clean up data, automate routine tasks and help you on the way to doing robust, reproducible research, as well as the confidence to continue learning. The aim of Software Carpentry is to teach researchers the fundamental skills that will help them be more productive while producing work of higher quality. We do that by teaching two day workshops, where students learn how to automate tasks using the Unix shell, how to track and share work using version control, and how to write software in Python, R, or MATLAB that is readable, reusable, and reliable. Feedback from past participants show that this training can save people half a day to a day a week for the rest of their careers. Students are able to do the things they used to do faster and more accurately, but are also able to tackle new challenges and pursue new research directions. Återkoppling från tidigare deltagare visar att den här träningen kan spara forskare en halv dag till en dag i veckan för resten av karriären. Deltagarna kan göra de uppgifter de brukar göra snabbare och mer exakt, men kan också ta itu med nya utmaningar och driva nya forskningsriktningar. Biotic interactions tracked by computer vision (BITCue)

Applications are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Science and Technology, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Bioscience programme. The position is available from 1 February 2018 or later.


Title:
Biotic interactions tracked by computer vision (BITCue)


Research area and project description:
The project aims to quantify plant-pollinator interactions in unprecedented detail using computer vision and machine learning. Specifically, the project will test how sensitive such interactions are to local and large-scale climatic variation, and to the composition of the pollinator community. The project will also assess the importance of interaction strength for plant reproduction. Flower visitation rates will be quantified at uniquely high temporal resolution across the growing season using a large number of time-lapse cameras. The project focuses on a widespread, insect pollinated plant species and its flower visitors across multiple Arctic field sites covering contrasting climate conditions. The detailed quantification of biotic interactions will be used to identify the most important climatic factors for flower visitation rates and pollination. The project will pioneer phenological studies at the level of individual flowers and is expected to pave the way for the application of computer vision in the study of biotic interactions. The project lies at the intersection of climate change ecology, computer vision and machine learning and is one of several collaborative projects among researchers at the Department of Bioscience and the Department of Engineering at Aarhus University with partners in several other countries. The candidate will work in a dynamic research environment with ample opportunities to interact with other researchers on related topics.


Qualifications and specific competences:
Applicants to the PhD position should ideally have a Master’s degree in biology with strong expertise in population and community ecology and excellent quantitative skills. Applicants with a Master’s degree in software engineering or computer science, and an interest in applying computer vision and machine learning tools in ecology are also encouraged to apply. Programming experience in R, Matlab and/or Python is an advantage. The applicant must have excellent writing skills, be independent, and should be enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary academic environment. Experience with fieldwork under demanding environmental conditions is an asset.

PhD position/Behavioural ecology: Cooperative breeding in Damaraland mole-rats /Linnaeus University/Kalmar

 

PhD-position in Behavioural ecology: Cooperative breeding in Damaraland mole-rats

 

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to be part of a newly established research group to investigate the causes and consequences of cooperative breeding in Damaraland mole-rats (Fukomys damarensis). The student will be involved in an ongoing field study in South Africa investigating the evolutionary causes and consequences of cooperative breeding and will use an established laboratory population to address questions about the physiological control of social behaviour in mole-rats.

 

Damaraland mole-rats are cooperative breeders that live in groups of up to 30 individuals. Breeding is limited to one reproductive female per group and non-reproductive males and females delay dispersal from the group and contribute to cooperative tasks (cooperative foraging, colony defence and allo-parental care). Individuals vary in investment in cooperative tasks but it is unclear how non-breeders affect the development of offspring and reproductive success in the groups. It is also largely unknown which physiological mechanisms underlie variation in cooperative behaviour.

 

At our field site, the Kalahari Research Centre (KRC, http://kalahari-meerkats.com/kmp/krc/), we are conducting research on a wild population of individually marked Damaraland mole-rats since 2014. The PhD student will be involved in maintaining this study population and will conduct field experiments manipulating breeding status and group size to investigate the costs and benefits of group living and cooperative breeding to non-breeders and breeders. Additionally, the student will conduct hormonal manipulations of non-breeders and breeders to investigate the physiological control of parental and allo-parental care behaviour in captive mole-rat groups maintained at the KRC.

The position is fully funded for 4 years and the successful applicant will be part of EEMiS, a multidisciplinary centre of excellence within Linnaeus University, Kalmar, Sweden (www.lnu.se). The PhD student will be part of a large collaborative project that involves several international collaborators. The specific research questions can be adjusted to the interests and qualifications of the successful candidate.

 

It is desirable that the applicant has experience with fieldwork in remote locations and has worked on wild animal populations and/or has a background in animal physiology. Experience with working on small mammals is considered an asset.
