[Oikos-listan] Fwd: Recruiting PhD students to Boise State US

------- Forwarded Message --------
Subject: Recruiting PhD students to Boise State
Date: Tue, 8 Nov 2016 12:26:24 -0700
From: Jennifer Forbey <jenniferforbey@boisestate.edu>

Dear Colleagues,

I am recruiting a PhD student to work in my lab on a project that
integrates physiology, chemistry, pharmacology and behavior to assess
molecular and behavioral responses of animals to stress (food and fear).
This project could focus on either conservation and management of
wildlife or biomedicine depending on the interests and expertise of the
student. In addition, this project provides opportunities for the
student to collaborate with international colleagues in Canada and
Scandinavia.

Interested students should have a masters degree or equivalent research
experience to be competitive for a graduate assistantship (teaching) -
which would be the primary financial support for the student during the PhD.

For students interested in careers focused on wildlife and ecology, they
should apply to our new interdisciplinary Ecology, Evolution and
Behavior PhD program (website available soon). The goal of this program
is to provide students a traditional foundation of disciplinary depth of
knowledge and expertise; skills and expertise that transcend
disciplinary boundaries; and collaborative partnerships that cross
disciplinary, organizational, and geographical boundaries.

For students interested in careers in biomedicine, they should apply to
our interdisciplinary Biomolecular Sciences Ph.D. Program. The goal of
this program is to fuse physical sciences with molecular life sciences
into a single curriculum, removing traditional barriers to promote
interdisciplinary thinking, training and research at the interface of
life science, biochemistry, and physics.
https://biomolecularsciences.boisestate.edu/

If you know of any good students who might be interested, please direct
them to contact me.

Thanks and hope all is well!

Jen

[Oikos-listan] PhD course: Grand Challenges in Ecology - where are we heading?( 1.5 HEC)

Welcome to the symposium and PhD course:

“Grand Challenges in Ecology- where are we heading?”

Symposium, workshop and course (1.5 HEC)

1-2 December 2016

Symposium Program

December 1, 9:00 to 16:00 in the lecture hall Loftet at SLU, campus Ultuna.

The open symposium aims to describe modern ecological challenges – and to stimulate discussion of how current PhD students, as the next generation of ecologists, can contribute to addressing them.

During the day three renowned young researchers: Prof. Elizabeth Crone (Tuft University, USA), Prof. Anna Gårdmark (SLU, Öregrund, Sweden) and Prof. Jason Tylianakis (University of Cantebury, New Zealand), will present their perspectives on what they regard interesting and important research questions emerging in our field.

After their presentations Prof. Peter Hambäck (Stockholm University) and Prof. Erik Westholm (SLU and Dalarna University) will join the invited speakers and the audience in a discussion about how to identify and address crucial ecological questions and what these may implicate for the the direction of our field. In the evening you are invited to the symposium dinner.

Workshop and course

December 2, 9:00 -16:00 at Work & Meet, campus Ultuna.

Together with the invited speakers from the symposium the workshop participants will discuss the symposium theme and propose questions to be asked and projects to pursue if resources were plentiful. Participants are expected to prepare individual short oral presentations, outlining their own ideas and topics to be addressed by future ecology. In the end of the day participants will team up to write a short (simplified) grant proposal for a hypothetical research project.

The course includes particpation in both the symposium and the workshop. For more information confer attached course plan and syllabus!

Register for the course asap or no later than Monday November 21 by sending an e-mail to Jonas Josefsson (jonas.josefsson@slu.se ). Please also indicate if you are coming to the symposium dinner.

If you have questions concerning the course: do not hesitate to contact the course organizers: Erik Öckinger (erik.ockinger@slu.se ), Helena Bylund (helena.bylund@slu.se) and Jonas Josefsson (jonas.josefsson@slu.se ).

[Oikos-listan] FW: Doctoral student position, deadline 8.11.2016

Doctoral student positions in Finland, please see information below:

From: Taskinen, Jouni [mailto:jouni.k.taskinen@jyu.fi]
Sent: den 4 november 2016 08:28
To: Geist, Jürgen; martin.osterling@kau.se; Manuel Lima (lopeslima.ciimar@gmail.com)
Subject: Doctoral student position, deadline 8.11.2016

Dear Juergen, Martin, Manuel

If you know a student interested in PhD project related to utilization of freshwater mussels in water treatment of aquaculture, please forward this message to him/her.

The Department of Biological and Environmental Science, University of Jyväskylä, currently seeks to recruit 4 doctoral students into its doctoral programme, starting earliest 1 January 2017. The deadline for applications is November 8, 2016, system closing at 23:59 Finnish time.

This (a bit complicated) procedure is such that

1) The candidate projects have been selected first, and now candidate students should send their applications online http://www.saimanet.com/certiahome/open_job_view.html?did=5600&jc=12&id=00002712&lang=fi at latest on 8th of November, 2016, so that they need to assign their application to a particular project. The projects and more information can be found here https://www.jyu.fi/bioenv/en/recruiting/doctoral-student-positions-2017

2) Then each project (=supervisor) will select one best candidate for their own project based on the applications. These top candidates are asked to write a 2-page long research plan on the thesis topic and invited to an interview.

So, among the candidate projects, there is “6. The use of biological traps for water treatment in recirculating aquaculture systems “ which is connected to freshwater mussels so that the aim is to test the use of mussels and other filter feeders in water treatment in recirculating aquaculture systems. I will not a supervisor in this PhD project, but I will be closely involved - the main supervisor will be Dr. Juhani Pirhonen juhani.pirhonen@jyu.fi. However, in addition to Juhani Pirhonen, I can also provide information about the project and the application, sure.

All the best,

Jouni
