Reminder: Sign up – Centennial anniversary of the ecotype concept 29th of November

Centennial anniversary of the ecotype concept: the legacy of Göte Turesson – 29th of November

This year is the centennial anniversary of the ecotype concept, which was coined by the Swedish geneticist Göte Turesson in 1922. Since then, the ecotype has served – and is still serving – as a focal concept in evolutionary ecology, especially in studies of the interaction between plants and their environment. The concept and methods introduced by Turesson have also had a large impact on the assessment of phenotypic variation for crop improvement, in its modern form known as "envirotyping". Turesson got his basic education in Biology at the University of Washington, USA. He returned to Sweden and received his PhD from Lund University in 1923. He was active in southern Sweden until 1935 when he became a professor in systematic botany and genetics at the Agricultural College at Ultuna outside Uppsala.

We plan to celebrate the anniversary by organizing a symposium on 29th November together with the annual NordPlant meeting on "Envirotyping for plant breeding and precision agriculture"  which takes place the day after, 30th November.  Both meetings are located at Blå Hallen, Ecology Building, Lund University. The symposium will be in a hybrid format, with the option to participate online

The programme on 29th November starts with a welcome reception between 08.30-09.15, followed by a general introduction and then a presentation of the historical context of the ecotype concept by Anna Tunlid (Lund University). Invited specialists will present different aspects of present-day applications of the ecotype concept. See attached program.

You now can now sign up for participation at the symposium from this net page:

Note that the number of seats is limited for the lunch and symposium dinner,  so please sign up as soon as possible, not later than Sunday 20 November.  However, it is possible to sign up later if you plan to attend remotely (through zoom) or do not plan to join the lunch and symposium dinner.

Extension for application: PhD-position on oaks, insects & microbes at Stockholm University

Dear colleagues,

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD-student to join the long-term research on the interactions between plants, insects & microbes, with a focus on the food web surrounding oak trees.

For more information see the project description (below) and the following link:

https://www.su.se/english/about-the-university/work-at-su/available-jobs/phd-student-positions-1.507588?rmpage=job&rmjob=19076&rmlang=UK

and don't hesitate to contact me directly by email, (the new closing date is November 18)

My best,

Ayco Tack

ayco.tack@su.se

Some more info: Questions that the project aims to answer are: Where do the microorganisms associated with plants come from? Are they inherited from the mother plant through the seeds, or are they acquired from the environment? How will plant-associated microorganisms affect the assembly of the insect community? What are the drivers that structure plant-associated multitrophic food webs, and do the structuring forces differ between microorganisms and macroorganisms?

To answer these questions, we have to link studies on the micro- and macrobiome across spatial and temporal scales. One useful approach is to focus on a diverse community associated with a keystone species. In this project we will use the pedunculate oak Quercus robur.

The PhD-student will be located at DEEP with Ayco Tack as main supervisor, but with complementary support by a group of co-supervisors with other competences.

Experts survey on soil vulnerability to natural disturbances

I forward a request for expertise from Stefano Manzoni at Stockholm
university <stefano.manzoni@natgeo.su.se>:

Dear colleagues,

I would like to invite you to fill in one or more of the surveys linked
below. We have launched a set of three surveys for experts to explore
opinions on the vulnerability of forest soils to the increase in
frequency and severity of natural disturbances (e.g. fire, drought, tree
mortality events) as a result of anthropogenic climate change. This is
part of the EU project HoliSoils (https://holisoils.eu/
<https://holisoils.eu/>).

With this survey we want to:

1. fill current gaps in our understanding of potential threats to soil
functioning
2. contrast the different opinions and points of view about soil
vulnerability of experts from different disciplines
Tree mortality: focus on the impacts of increasing incidence of tree
mortality associated with droughts or pests

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdsrID68Mb74SAZnrLiKS4r1OxyjBLRukTd2mtOa7vmficP8Q/viewform?usp=sf_link
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdsrID68Mb74SAZnrLiKS4r1OxyjBLRukTd2mtOa7vmficP8Q/viewform?usp=sf_link>

Drought: focus on the impacts of increasing intensity and frequency of
extreme drought events

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfCkZR4ikjwfZU5vHCQaWeXSUSpjk9okEQi0GgsUfVtKFYI7A/viewform?usp=sf_link
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfCkZR4ikjwfZU5vHCQaWeXSUSpjk9okEQi0GgsUfVtKFYI7A/viewform?usp=sf_link>

Wildfires: focus on the impacts of increasing intensity and frequency of
wildfires

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe9la5bOBQcAkkeB-7N19I-k1B6g4m367ZgAwuYhZ8xxUg8NA/viewform?usp=sf_link

Pick the disturbance you are most familiar with (or all of them!)—it
should take about 20 minutes to complete one survey. Feel free to
circulate among your colleagues.

In case of any questions, please let us know via email to the survey
coordinator (Jorge Curiel jorge.curiel@bc3research.org
<mailto:jorge.curiel@bc3research.org>).

Thanks!
