Subject: PostDoc/Researcher: What factors keep pollinator-unfriendly practices in place? A social scientific investigation

Dear all,

See below for an exciting interdisciplinary PostDoc/Researcher post at SLU, Uppsala, Sweden. Would be fantastic if you could send this around through your personal networks.

DESCRIPTION:

Would you like to take part in revealing why practices of natural resource management that threaten biodiversity remain in place despite direction provided by science and policy? We invite applications for a researcher position linked to a research project on barriers to and motivations for societal transition towards management of natural resources that reverses decline of biodiversity, in particular pollinating insects. The project is a close collaboration between social scientists and ecologists and provides an ideal opportunity to develop your inter- and transdisciplinary research capacity.

PhD candidate: Biodiversity in life-cycle assessments

Dear all,

We are searching for a PhD candidate for an interdisciplinary project, aiming at developing ways to integrate impacts on biodiversity from food production in life cycle assessments.

The candidate will work in a team lead by Dr. Elin Röös, and with partners having expertise in ecology, agronomy, life cycle assessment and data analysis

Maybe you have an engineering/data science degree and want to apply your knowledge in modeling, statistics and data processing in the field of biodiversity - that is, the conservation of the diversity of animals, plants and other organisms? Or maybe you are an ecologist / biologist who wants to ensure that the data available on species abundance and richness in different landscapes and agricultural systems can be made useful for decision makers in the food industry?

Postdoc: Barriers to and motivations for practices reversing biodiversity decline

We announce a postdoc opportunity at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences:

A social scientific investigation on factors that keep pollinator-unfriendly practices in place.

We reach out to applicants who would like to take part in revealing why practices of natural resource management that threaten biodiversity remain in place despite evidence and direction provided by science and policy. We invite applications for research on barriers to and motivations for societal transition towards management of natural resources that reverses decline of biodiversity, in particular pollinating insects. The project is a close collaboration between social scientists and ecologists and provides an ideal opportunity to develop your inter- and transdisciplinary research capacity.

The position is based at the Department of Ecology of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala https://www.slu.se and is in close collaboration with the Department of Urban and Rural Development SLU. The postdoc will join an interdisciplinary team of social and natural scientists including René van der Wal, Klara Fischer, Riccardo Bommarco and others.

PhD and Postdoc position in theoretical ecology

Dear colleagues,

I just wanted to highlight open PhD and postdoc positions in theoretical ecology, including an experimental part,  in a very interesting and nice group. Details below.

Best wishes,

Anna

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open PhD and Postdoc positions in theoretical ecology

How do organisms respond to environmental changes? What mechanisms promote their persistence? This is one of the most fundamental challenges in biology today. To explore it, join us in this exciting collaborative, international and interdisciplinary project, funded by the Human Frontier Science Program. Full-time PhD and postdoctoral positions in theoretical ecology are available in the lab of Dr. Shai Pilosof (Ben Gurion University, Israel). The project is international, in collaboration with Dr. James Hall (University of Liverpool) and Prof. Manlio De Dominico (University of Padua). Travel to collaborating labs in Italy and the UK is an integral part of the project.

You will develop novel theoretical and computational models to explore the eco-evolutionary dynamics of microbial ecological networks and how they respond to changing environments. Theoretical results will be integrated with experiments. You should have experience in research that combines biology with quantitative fields such as theoretical ecology, applied mathematics or physics.

Two postdoc-positions focussing on winter seasonality of arctic terrestrial ecosystems (based in Abisko)

Dear colleagues,

Johan Olofsson and Ellen Dorrepaal, in collaboration with Sara Hallin and Karina Clemmensen in Uppsala, are now opening up two postdoc-positions (3 years each), and I hope you will help us spread this information to suitable candidates!

Deadline for application: 27 May 2022

umu.varbi.com

The Department of Ecology and Environmental Science at Umeå University, Sweden, invites applicants for two postdoc positions (3 years) focusing on year-round seasonality of plant and microbial carbon

The holders of the positions will investigate year-round seasonal (a)synchronies in plant and microbial carbon and nitrogen cycling in arctic terrestrial ecosystems, and how these are driven by environmental and community variation.

The two positions are part of a large interdisciplinary project that aims to understand and quantify how processes during the arctic winter may be decisive for overall feedbacks from arctic tundra to the global climate. Arctic ecosystems store large amounts of organic carbon in plants and soil. Uptake of carbon by arctic plants is strongly limited by their access to nutrients, especially nitrogen, due to competition by microbes. Year-round carbon and nitrogen balances thus depend the activities of plant and microbial communities and their seasonality. This multidisciplinary project will involve a research team of about eleven senior and postdoctoral scientists, four PhD students and two technical staff. Together, we will advance basic knowledge of plant and microbial activities during the cold season. The project will further assess the environmental drivers and community traits that may be used to up-scale and predict effects of asynchronies on year-round carbon and nitrogen balances of tundra. The positions will be based in Abisko. More information can be found via the links above. We welcome all applications!

Thanks for your help, and apologies for cross-postings.

Best wishes,

Ellen

PhD-position in hybridization genomics at Lund University

Hi all,

I would want to announce an opening for a PhD-student in hybridization genomics at Lund University, Sweden, and I would be really grateful if you could spread this add in your networks.

We have an opening for an ambitious PhD-student within the HybridExpress ERC-project. The goal of the PhD project is to address the role of gene expression in hybridization derived novelty, using Mediterranean island populations of the hybrid Italian sparrow (Passer italiae) as a study system. This is a 4 year fully funded position for an evolutionary biology MSc with strong skills in bioinformatics.

The Department of Biology is a vibrant research environment with 300 employees, with a lot of opportunities for scientific discussion including invited Departmental lecturers, journal clubs and discussion meetings. The department also offers great opportunities for social interactions through a well-visited departmental pub, board game evenings, floor hockey and indoor soccer activities. Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world's top 100 universities. The University has around 44 000 students and more than 8 000 staff.

Senior Lecturer in Chemical Ecology, Lund University, Faculty of Science, Department of Biology

The new position is intended to strengthen department's long tradition of research within chemical ecology. By using a broad spectrum of techniques, our researchers study the function of chemical signals, how those signals have evolved, and how they can be used in for instance pest control. Our chemical ecology researchers contribute to the international PhD student course Sensory Ecology, which attracts doctoral students from all over the world. The Department of Biology is also a member of the Max Planck Centre for Next Generation Insect Chemical Ecology in collaboration with Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany.
