Open PhD position - Genetic population structure of Baltic Sea eelgrass

We have a PhD position available at the Department of Marine Sciences, University of Gothenburg, to work on the new research project funded by the research council FORMAS "Genetic population structure of Baltic Sea eelgrass - urgent information for conservation of a foundation species under climate change".

We are seeking an independent and collaborative person with a background in population genetics/genomics to pursue PhD studies in Marine Sciences. The PhD project will focus on population genomic assessments of a seagrass in the Baltic Sea to provide a baseline for future temporal conservation genetic monitoring of eelgrass in Sweden. Investigating into local adaptation, genetic demographic modelling and species distribution modelling can then help to address persistence and adaptation potential under predicted climate change. The research project itself is very collaborative and will involve collaboration with international and Swedish researchers.

This position is placed at the Tjärnö Marine Laboratory, a stimulating work place on an island on the Swedish west coast, ca 2hrs North of Gothenburg (https://www.gu.se/en/tjarno)

Closing date 2021-05-09

2-years researcher/post-doc position in evolutionary biology (adaptation genomics)

Open position: 2-years researcher/post-doc position in project on temperature adaptations in Littorina snails

Applications must be submitted electronically by 02.05.2021

We invite applications from motivated candidates for a two-year researcher position in evolutionary biology at the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture, Nord University (Bodø, Norway). The position is available from June 1st 2021.

The successful candidate will study the genomic basis of temperature adaptation in the marine snail Littorina saxatilis. Understanding how organisms adapt to their environment at the genomic level is a major goal in evolutionary biology; research on adaptation to local climatic conditions obtains great urgency in times of anthropogenic climate change. L. saxatilis is an emerging model system in evolutionary genomics and very suitable for studying temperature adaptation as it inhabits a large range of climatic environments, which often vary on small spatial scales.

The position will be part of an international project funded by the Research Council of Norway focusing on how temperature adaptation changes across space, e.g. whether the same traits and loci contribute to adaptation to warm temperatures in different geographical locations. Towards this goal, snail sampling across Europe will be combined with experimental and genomic approaches.

The successful candidate will be part of an international team of researchers across Europe (https://littorina.group.shef.ac.uk), connected by a common interest in evolutionary processes and enthusiasm for discussion, creativity and diversity in research. The project will include work at the Tjärnö Marine Lab in Sweden and possibilities to visit European collaborators.

Open position at Erken field station

Dear all,

we have an open 2-year position for a research engineer at the Erken Laboratory connected to our long-term lake monitoring programme and mesocosm experiments.

Please forward to anyone that might be interested!

Best wishes,

Silke

Short description

The Erken Laboratory (Erken) is part of SITES (Swedish Infrastructure for Ecosystem Science), which has the aim to provide access to unique infrastructure and support for national as well as international researchers. We maintain an extensive long-term lake monitoring programme, including different sensor systems, and have infrastructure to conduct mesocosm experiments in the lake. Erken coordinates the thematic programme SITES AquaNet, which is a standardized and harmonized infrastructure for aquatic mesocosm experiments with installations at several SITES stations. SITES AquaNet is a partner in the EU-project AQUACOSM-plus, where one of the main aims is to offer researchers access to leading European Mesocosm facilities. Finally, we are part of SITES Water, which is a harmonized long-term measurement program that collects background information on lake climate and biogeochemical processes that can support station research projects and document long-term changes.

The position will focus on a range of working tasks related to both SITES and AQUACOSM-plus. The candidate will conduct and support measurements in the lake and in mesocosms. This includes maintenance of autonomous sensor systems and experimental installations as well as data management (e.g. QA/QC). Another important task is the coordination of a distributed mesocosm experiment which is going to be conducted in 2022 within AQUACOSM-plus at several SITES stations. Administrative tasks such as purchases of equipment, reporting, communication with visiting researchers etc. are also part of the position.

The application deadline is April 15, 2021 and more information, including a link to the application system can be found here:
