Ecology of Agriculture

A course for PhD students interested in exploring ecological processes
in agricultural production systems and how they relate to agronomic
practices. A brief introduction into relevant ecology concepts, will be
followed by special focus on ecosystem processes that influence crop
production level and stability (e.g., nutrient cycling, pollination,
herbivory, predation), and the biodiversity that drives these processes
above and below ground, and how these shape crop yield. It will further
be discussed how ecological principles can be employed in the
development of crop production systems to improve efficiency and
sustainability of agriculture.

5 ECTS

September 7-11 (preparatory part) and September 14-18 (retreat workshop
at Ekenäs herrgård)

Apply no later than July 1, 2020 by sending an e-mail to the course
organizer Riccardo Bommarco (riccardo.bommarco@slu.se).

Two year postdoctorial position in evolutionary biology at SLU Alnarp, Sweden

Two year postdoctorial position in evolutionary biology at SLU Alnarp, Sweden - plant interactions with antagonists and the root microbiome

We seek a motivated postdoctoral researcher who will work on a new project investigating selection of plant defence against antagonists in wild Solanum in relation to the composition of the root microbiome in different habitats. An exciting new development in studies of plant and animal immunity indicates that microbial composition in the animal gut, or the phylo- or rhizosphere of plants, is a strong contributing factor to good health. It has been suggested that microorganisms present on plants may act as an outer, first layer of immune defence against infection by pathogenic microbes. To gain a more general understanding of evolution of plant health, we need to conduct studies in natural populations taking into account selective forces generated by microbial communities and their interactions with plants.

The project also has important applied aspects for future development of sustainable plant protection strategies. The project will be performed in close connection with integrated plant protection in cultivated potato against the important potato diseases early and late blight.

Closing date 2nd of April, 2020.

Postdoctoral fellow in landscape ecotoxicology

Dear all,

The Department of Biology at Lund University is seeking a postdoctoral fellow in landscape ecotoxicology, with a focus on bumble bees and other bees. The postdoc will work in the project “Exposure and Effects of Chemical Mixtures on Bees (MixToxBee) - Supporting Pesticide Monitoring and Bee Risk Assessment”. The project aims to quantify bees’ exposure to pesticide mixtures and evaluate effects on individual bees and bee populations, using experiments and modelling. The outcome is relevant for monitoring pesticide residues in terrestrial environments and ecological risk assessment of chemical mixtures for bees. Pesticide exposure is estimated by quantifying residues in pollen and nectar collected by several bee species and extending bee foraging models to include pesticide use. This data is used to select environmentally relevant mixtures of pesticides for lab and landscape experiments in combination with individual-based modelling of bee individuals, colonies, populations and pollination services.

1 PhD-position at Lund University

There are currently 2 PhD positions on pollinators open for application at Lund University, one is about how to manage agricultural land to benefit pollinators, and the other one is about if and how road verges can be used to benefit pollinators (not that Swedish is required for the second one, but not for the first one).

DEADLINE 23rd FEBRUARY!

1.       To mitigate loss of farmland biodiversity, including insect pollinators, much effort has been spent on preserving and managing semi-natural grasslands. However, our ability to reverse current negative trends using only this approach is limited, since grasslands that have already been lost are difficult to restore and costly to manage for increased benefits to biodiversity. In addition, semi-natural grasslands are today mostly managed by grazing, resulting in a lack of critical floral resources for many insects during summer. In this project, we will therefore investigate if management of the landscape surrounding semi-natural grasslands, focusing on increasing the availability of flower resources during critical periods, can enhance their conservation value for flower-visiting insects.

2.       Biologisk mångfald i infrastruktur.

Oikos list: Sign the Scientists Statement on the EU's Common Agricultural Policy by Friday 14.2

(apologies if you are receiving this email a second time for some reason).

Dear colleague,

It would be highly appreciated if you could send the message below (or
a language derivative of it) in your institute or among colleagues,
giving them the opportunity to sign our statement about the CAP before
Friday, 14th of February, 23:00 CET.

Thanks for your cooperation,

Guy Pe'er on behalf of all authors.

-------------------

Making agriculture sustainable is a global challenge. In the EU, the
Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) continues to fail biodiversity,
climate, soil, land degradation as well as socio-economic challenges
especially in rural areas. Several independent evaluations conclude
that the European Commission's proposal for the CAP post-2020 allows
Member States to choose a low-ambition implementation. With a new
Parliament and Commission, the reform process has now restarted. It is
therefore time to act on urgent challenges and address citizens'
demands for sustainable agriculture, using the full breadth of
available scientific knowledge.

As you may have heard already, a group of 21 authors have generated a
position paper (or "scientists' statement") calling on the European
Parliament and the EU's Member States to adopt ten urgent actions for
delivering sustainable food production, biodiversity conservation, and
climate mitigation towards an evidence-based, future-proof European
agriculture. The paper will shortly be published in People and Nature
(https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/25758314).

If you are a scientist and you share our concerns about agricultural
sustainability and the role of the CAP, consider joining us as a
signatory BEFORE 14.2, 23:00PM CET.

PhD position - microbiome physiology and microbial interactions - Future Arctic

Future Arctic is still looking for a PhD student. Please share! Description is attached and as follows:

PhD student will quantify how physiological responses of microbial taxa to warming alter C cycling in soil. iChip (isolation chip) technology will be used to incubate microbial taxa in their natural environment. You will assess growth, turnover, enzyme activity and nutrient scavenging using a range of techniques including isotope labelling (e.g., qSIP or NanoSIMS) and next generation sequencing. The goal is to elucidate in-situ metabolic capacities and life-history traits of a range of microbial taxa and their possible change in a future climate. Individual-based microbial community modelling will then be used to explore interactions among microbial groups and their effect on community response to warming, based on the data gained in the experimental part of the project.
