Oikos Satellite Symposium: New opportunities for data driven research

Welcome to one of four Oikos satellite symposia on 4th February 2019:

https://www.slu.se/en/departments/ecology/konferenser/oikos-2019/general-information-about-oikos-2019/

Oikos Satellite Symposium: New opportunities for data driven research in Nordic ecosystems

In this satellite symposium we will explore major trends in data driven ecological research and related challenges.

Date and place

4th of February 2019, Uppsala, Sweden

Ecology is evolving fast. Our discipline goes through a rapid transformation process to support global sustainability targets and understand human pressures on our ecosystems. In this process a number of characteristic trends can be observed. For example, new methods for data collection and analysis, such as citizen science and autonomous observation techniques are quickly developed and adopted. At the same time, ecologists increasingly engage in well-organized community networks. Both trends lead to a fast accumulation of available data and enable more inter-disciplinary and scalable ecological research.

A major facilitator in this process is the emerging landscape of biodiversity information systems, which offer services for easier access and publication of relevant data on biodiversity. These infrastructures have the potential to offer fundamentally new ways to conduct ecological science in the future.

The symposium will include both, presentations as well as data-focused demo sessions.

Registration

Registration for participation is now open. Last day for register is on the January 22, 2019. Please register and sign up to give a presentation by sending an e-mail to Matthias.obst@marine.gu.se with the following information:

Two PhD student positions in the project “Cooperation, Evolution and Resource Management”

Two PhD student positions in the project "Cooperation, Evolution and Resource Management"

Our project funded by the Kone Foundation tests the applicability of evolutionary models to the study of human decision-making processes in the context of natural resource management. Our approach is interdisciplinary, and combines research questions and methodologies from both social and natural sciences. An important methodology shared by the two disciplines is the game theoretical approach. In the global scale there has been a shift from the Tragedy of Commons approach to the Drama of Commons approach with a more optimistic view on the capacity of local stakeholders to solve problems related to common pool resource management. We are mainly interested to find out in what circumstances a stable local common pool resource management might succeed. Our empirical focus will be on the management of Finnish fish and game resources, reindeer pastures and common forests. A more theoretical focus is finding the key differences and commonalities between the theories used in different fields.

Duties: We recruit two graduate students who would cooperate in data collection, statistical analyses and writing articles. Data will be extracted from the long-term datasets collected by Finnish national research institutions (mainly Statistics Finland, Natural Resources Institute Finland, Finnish Environment Institute, The Finnish Wildlife Agency, Finnish Forest Centre, Reindeer Herders' Association) and their local offices. For specific research questions interview studies will be performed. An important theoretical framework throughout the project will be the Social Ecological Systems (SES) theory developed by Elinor Ostrom and her co-researchers.

Qualifications: Applicants should hold an MSc or equivalent degree, for example in (evolutionary) biology, economy or some of the social sciences. Priority will be given to applicants with a strong interest in interdisciplinary work and theoretical issues, and willingness to learn new methodologies or approaches also from other disciplines. Knowledge of Finnish is not a requirement but is considered an asset as most of the data will be sources in Finnish.

Place of work: University of Turku (with one of the PhD degrees done to University of Oulu)

Work group: LuHa - Jon Brommer, Timo Vuorisalo (University of Turku), Lauri Rapeli (Åbo Akademi University),
Patrik Karell (NOVIA University of Applied Science), Heikki Helanterä (University of Oulu)

Form of employment:
The doctoral candidates recruited for this position will be paid a non-negotiable grant of €28,800/year during 2019-2022 for which approximately 14% is to be paid as compulsory social charges (see https://www.mela.fi/en/grant-and-scholarship-recipients/premiums-and-invoicing/myel-premium-amount) and of which some part is taxed (see www.vero.fi).

Extent: 100 %

Starting date: Preferably February 1, 2019 (negotiable)

Application: No later than 20 January 2019. The application is electronic, sent by Email to jon.brommer@utu.fi Please attach your diploma, CV, a letter of motivation where you describe why you would be a suitable candidate for the position, and names and contact addresses of at least two persons who can provide a reference for you. Your application will be temporarily stored for the sole purpose of recruiting the two positions advertised here; it will not be shared with others than the LuHa workgroup members and will be permanently deleted after recruitment is concluded.

Contact person: Associate professor Jon Brommer (jon.brommer@utu.fi), University of Turku; Associate professor Heikki Helanterä (heikki.helantera@oulu.fi), University of Oulu.

2 year postdoc on evolution of insecticide resistance at SLU Alnarp

Postdoc opportunity on the evolution of insecticide resistance at SLU, Alnarp.

We look for a highly motivated postdoc to study the impact of host plant range on the evolution of insecticide resistance in pest insects. The project period is 2 years, funded by a taxfree scholarship from Carl Tryggers Foundation.

Project description
An increased number of phytophagous pest insects have developed resistance to the available insecticides. According to the pre-adapted hypothesis, insecticide resistance readily evolves in herbivorous insects since they already are adapted to tolerate and resist chemical defences of their host plants. Recent research has suggested that generalists are more prone to evolve insecticide resistance and, moreover, that insecticide resistance may evolve when insects expand their host plant range. This opens up for the converse hypothesis that evolution of insecticide resistance could select for an increased degree of generalism, i.e. an extended use of host plant species, in the insect. This project aims to investigate the pre-adapted hypothesis in a generalist and a specialist moth species, respectively, as well as the converse hypotheses that insecticide resistance increases host plant range. To study this, we will perform selection experiments combined with transcriptome analysis and entometabolomic profiling.

Organisation
The project is a collaboration between Dr Kristina Karlsson Green, Prof Peter Anderson and Dr Amit Roy. The postdoc will be based at the department of Plant Protection Biology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Alnarp. The molecular analyses may be performed at the Czech University of Life Sciences, Prague. Start date: as soon as possible.

Merits
We seek a person with a PhD in Biology or equivalent. Previous experience in working with insecticide resistance, selection experiments with insects or molecular analyses is meriting. High motivation and enthusiasm is important, as well as ability to work both independently and in a team. Personal skills are therefore an important part of the evaluation.

Application and contact
Please send your application including CV, list of publications, copy of PhD diploma, references and personal letter directly to kristina.karlsson.green@slu.se, no later than the 11th of January. Do not hesitate to e-mail if you have further questions!
