The Department of Zoology at Stockholm University has just opened a search for Director of the Tovetorp Zoological Research Station.

This is a full-time, indefinite-term position with a six-month trial period. Salaries at Stockholm University are determined individually. The position starts in winter-spring 2018.

The Department of Zoology has a long history of basic and applied research on animals ranging from insects to large mammals, with a staff of around 100 employees, of which 17 are permanent Lecturers/Professors and 40 are PhD students. The Department keeps a research station (Tovetorp) in a rural location 95 km south-west of Stockholm, with facilities for field and laboratory experiments, as well as for courses and teaching.

We now invite applicants for the position as Director of the research station. We are looking for a dynamic, creative and versatile person who can lead and manage the activities at the station. Among the important tasks for the Director are to ensure that research and teaching at the station are of the highest quality and to attract strong scientists, both from Stockholm University and other universities, as well as substantial course activities, to the station.

The responsibilities for the director include leadership of the station, and planning of the day-to-day activities for animal care takers, technicians, and kitchen staff. The director is also responsible for station administration, oversight of animal experimentation and housing, and station maintenance and infrastructure development. The director should take active part in animal caretaking and contribute practical and technical advice and technical support to ongoing research projects in the laboratories and in the field.

Qualification requirements: A PhD in Zoology, or a corresponding proficiency that the employer judges as equivalent. Experience from research studies on animals in the field, in enclosures, and/or in the laboratory. Administrative skills. Experience in design of studies, data handling and analysis, including computer use. Both experience of entrepreneurship and handling of equipment used for animal studies will be an advantage. Teaching skills and communication skills in Swedish and in English. Good ability to cooperate and lead working groups is required, as well as organizational skills.

Oikos list: 4 PhD positions on the ‘ecology of fear’ in wildlife

4 PhD opportunities are available to work with Liana Zanette at Western University, Canada.  Prof. Zanette heads the world's leading research group experimentally testing the effects of predator-induced fear on the population and community dynamics of wildlife, and has published seminal papers demonstrating that fear itself (perceived predation risk) is powerful enough to affect wildlife population dynamics (Science 2011), the fear of large carnivores can itself cause a trophic cascade (Nature Communications 2016), andthe fear the human "super predator" inspires in large carnivores can in turn have cascading effects on ecosystems (Proc R Soc B 2017).  PhD 1 will conduct the first ever comprehensive test of the total impact of fear on the population growth rate in wildlife.  PhD 2 will conduct the first fully manipulative experimental test of whether the fear of large carnivores affects the demography of large herbivores, and has cascading trophic impacts on plant responses.  PhD 3 will test the demographic and behavioural impacts the fear of lions has on their ungulate prey.  PhD 4 will test whether 'interrogating' wildlife about their fear of humans can be used as a tool to diagnose the extent and intensity of poaching and disturbance by ecotourists.  PhDs 1 and 2 will be conducted on song sparrows and black-tailed deer respectively, on Canada's Gulf Islands, and PhDs 3 and 4 will be conducted in private game reserves in South Africa.  Applicants should have an MSc, a passion for research, experience conducting field experiments, publications in internationally-competitive journals, evidence of research/interest in the ecology of fear, and have or be well-positioned to compete for an external scholarship.  Western guarantees a minimum stipend for up to four years.  Applicants should provide: (1) a cover letter; (2) CV with names of 3 referees; and (3) unofficial transcripts from previous degrees.  Use the subject line "Ecology of fear PhD" and e-mail materials to lzanette@uwo.ca.  Review of applications will begin 15 January 2018.

The EGU General Assembly 2018 (EGU2018) is taking place in Vienna, Austria from 8-13 Apr 2018 (http://www.egu2018.eu). Convening a phenology and seasonality session, we want to bring together biogeoscientists, ecologists, climate scientists and other researchers that use phenology and indicators of seasonality changes to increase our understanding of ecosystem changes and climate impacts and feedbacks at all temporal and spatial scales. 

 

The phenology session has established itself as very well attended and a nice community for interaction between researchers interested in phenology and seasonal changes. We are looking forward to your contribution and to meeting you in Vienna!

CAFF-IASC Science Policy Fellowship   View this email in your browser   CAFF-IASC Science Policy Fellowship Call for Applications In partnership with APECS As two international organizations based in Akureyri, Iceland, the Conservation of Flora and Fauna (CAFF) and the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC), are teaming up together and with the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) to help early career scientists get more involved in the process of taking research from results through to science policy recommendations. We are looking for two CAFF-IASC Fellows in this inaugural year. Fellows will identify a joint area of interest and expertise, participate in and contribute to CAFF’s work, and produce some culminating output. Application deadline: 15 Dec 2017 at 23:59 GMT This year's areas of interest are: The Arctic Migratory Bird Initiative Circumpolar Terrestrial Biodiversity monitoring in the Arctic The duration of the Fellowships will be from January through November 2018. Each Fellow will begin by attending the CAFF Board Meeting (6-8 Feb 2018; Fairbanks, Alaska), continue on with an appropriate working group meeting, and contribute to the program of the Arctic Biodiversity Congress. As appropriate, Fellows will continue working with their CAFF groups to deliver peer-reviewed publications and/or a report to the Arctic Council Senior Arctic Officials.
