Dear Colleagues, in the latest Board meeting in Halle, we have had occasion to discuss about the role of EEF for the science of ecology in Europe in relation to the changes that are occurring in European Union, starting with Brexit and including the feeling against the EU, growing in different countries. We thought that it was time for EEF to affirm that "...the European Ecological Federation represents the scientific ecological community of the whole Europe and that we will continue to put all our efforts into working with you and on your behalf in order to strengthen ecological science in your country and the whole of Europe, no matter what happens….". I thank Stefan Klotz for highlighting first this need. So the Board has draft a letter, that I am attaching to this mail, with a clear statement about our perspective on the EEF missions to support the continuous development of the science of ecology in the whole European continent and to work more energetically than ever before to reinforce the international collaboration among scientists in Europe, with a particular attention to early career ecologists. We thought that it would be great if we could give a symbolic signal by circulating the EEF statement to all members of the ecological societies by tomorrow, in correspondence with the official start of the the Brexit procedure. We will be grateful to you if you could give us a feedback of the actions that your national society will perform to circulate widely this message. Yours Sincerely, Alberto Basset

[Oikos-listan] Position: Associate Senior Lecturer in Ecology - forest protection against insects

Dear All,

Please spread the information about this position at the Department of Ecology, SLU, Uppsala to potential applicants:

Associate Senior Lecturer in Ecology with special emphasis on forest protection against economically important insect pests.

http://www.slu.se/en/about-slu/jobs-vacancies/read-more/?eng=1&Pid=3080

We are interested in candidates with experience and interest in research on insect pests in forests with the aim to reduce their damage and achieve sustainable pest management strategies. A suitable research focus is interactions between insect pest and host tree, including both the insect's behaviour and the tree's defenses and resistance to damage. Other appropriate research areas are how to counteract the damage by applying knowledge about pest-insect population dynamics, the impact of natural enemies and by forest management measures. The Associate Senior Lecturer is expected to conduct high-quality research generating results that can be implemented in practical forestry.
The Associate Senior Lecturer is expected to mainly pursue research in a project that explores the possibilities of using variation in resistance of spruce and pine seedlings to reduce damage by pine weevils and bark beetles. To investigate variation in resistance among material from the Swedish forest breeding program, field trials will be established in cooperation with the Forest Research Institute of Sweden. The mechanisms that allow seedlings with a certain genotype to survive better than others should also be studied in the project. The project will provide an excellent basis for developing general research skills in the area of forest protection against economically important insect pests. There will also be room to perform and freely develop innovative research in this area. You should be able to teach at basic and advanced levels in the subjects that are central to your area of research, and also assist in tutoring at the advanced level and in the development of new courses and the supervision of doctoral students. The position provides a very good basis to build a future external financing.

The Department of Ecology conducts internationally strong empirical and theoretical research and education aimed towards sustainable forestry, agriculture and conservation. Our research on populations, communities and ecosystems form the basis of our research on the effects of land use and climate on animals, plants and soil. We aim at finding solutions that will contribute to improve greenhouse gas balance, conserve threatened species, support biodiversity and ecosystem services, sustainable wildlife management and pest management in forest and agricultural landscape as well as in urban areas. A research area of great applied interest is to find environmentally beneficial ways to counteract economically significant damage to forest production caused by insect pests.

[Oikos-listan] Position: Senior lecturer in forest entomology

Dear All,

Please spread this information:

A position as senior lecturer in forest entomology is vacant at the Faculty of Forest Sciences, Department of Ecology, based in Uppsala.

Senior lecturer with collaboration duties in forest entomology - focus on insect pests.

http://www.slu.se/en/about-slu/jobs-vacancies/read-more/?eng=1&Pid=3059

The subject area includes studies of forest insect´s ecology, distribution and dynamics as well as development of forest protection methods against insects. It is of particular interest that the senior lecturer contributes with knowledge in the subject area that can be put into practice regarding how to limit the negative impacts of forest insect pests, and that it contributes to the management of various conflicting objectives in forestry.

The senior lecturer should within the subject area lead and develop SLU's cooperation with the surrounding community, conduct counseling to actors in the forestry sector and to the public, and conduct research as well as participate in teaching. Advice on insect pests in forests at the national level is an essential part of the job. The senior lecturer is expected to conduct active research in any part of the subject area and to take part in the education at the faculty. The position involves contacts with both Swedish and foreign stakeholders and authorities and with the international scientific community.

The department is housed in the Ecology Centre where we conduct internationally recognized research, environmental analysis and education. We generate ecological knowledge for sustainable use of natural resources based on ecological knowledge, which benefits both agriculture and forestry as well as conservation. Changes in climate and land use creates an increasing need for new ecological knowledge. At the Department of Ecology, we have the ambition to be at the forefront of research in applied ecology. This ambition also requires basic research. Collaboration with various parts of the surrounding community, companies and organizations are an important part of the work.

Kind regards,

Christer B

[Oikos-listan] Summer School in France on "Weak signals and emerging issues in ecological transition"

The COTE Cluster of Excellence organises its fifth Summer School on "Weak signals and emerging issues in ecological transition". We would appreciate if you could forward the announcement below or remind potentially interested PhD students. The updated programme, further details on our speakers and registration terms are also on the COTE Summer School website<http://cotesummerschool.u-bordeaux.fr/en/>. Application deadline is 09 April 2017.

The Summer School is part of the COTE Cluster of Excellence training programme and gathers PhD students in environmental sciences, each specialised in different disciplines such as ecology, chemistry, biology and even sociology. Through talks, field trips and round tables with international experts on integrative ecology, the programme will provide a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach on the definition, detection and role of weak signals and emerging issues in the ecological transition.

Conference speakers:
Ivan Ascher (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA)
Jelle Behagel (Wageningen University, the Netherlands)
Gabrielle Bouleau (Irstea Bordeaux, France)
Hélène Budzinski (CNRS Bordeaux, France)
Laure Carassou (University of Bordeaux, France)
Anne-Marie Delort (Institute of Chemistry of Clermont-Ferrand, France)
Iñaki Garcia de Cortazar-Atauri (INRA Avignon, France)
Pieter Leroy (Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands)
Marcus Lindner (European Forest Institute, Finland)

Theme & programme:
Climate-induced ecological changes as well as changes in consumption patterns have led to emerging issues. These often manifest before full development as weak signals, which can reveal important trends within ecosystems. However, it is often difficult to distinguish them statistically from ambient noise, or from random fluctuations of well-known signals. The COTE Summer School will show that scientists have more and more tools to monitor the planet. Its programme will cover several aspects of weak signals and emerging issues with presentations on new detectable substances in the environment, environmental reporting, ecological governance and political change for transition, weak signals and measurement techniques in marine, vineyard, forest and river ecosystems, and even on a paradigm shift related to the role of cloud microorganisms in atmospheric processes.

Participants, fees & how to apply:
The course is free of charge and includes accommodation and meals. Travel expenses must be covered by the participants. Mobility grants are available on demand (for details see application form). The course is in English and candidates must be PhD students.

[Oikos-listan] 6 post-docs & 10 PhDs in chemical & forest ecology, Prague

We are opening 6 post-docs* and 10 PhD positions, looking for team members to our new project dealing with molecular and classical chemical ecology, forest entomology, remote sensing, and forest ecology. Details and links below. *) Deadline 2017 April 16th.

Welcome to apply!

Fredrik Schlyter, Project Research Leader.

Project

We have at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CULS) been bestowed a large 6-yr grant "Climatic Change Impact Mitigation in Forest ‐from Gene to Landscape". https://extemit.fld.czu.cz/cs/

Forests are critical biotic elements that may act as vital carbon sinks but could become carbon sources if disrupted or improperly managed. The challenge is most acute for northern conifer forests and maybe most critical in the Central Europe regions. Our proposal endeavours to use the many facets of molecular biology now emerging in harmony with the applied science needed to manage forests. We will study genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics together with proven genetic and metabolomics (chemical ecology) and theory of larger scale plant-insect interactions (Associational Resistance, Semiochemical Diversity Hypothesis), mainly for two bark beetles.

We work on the conifer tree-beetle interactions at three levels of scale: Gene, Tree, and Landscape:

https://extemit.fld.czu.cz/cs/r-12330-levels-of-study

Among studies, we will first sequence the genome of the Ips typographus, first used for functional analysis of olfactory receptor proteins, then tree resistance will be observed and experimentally manipulated, while landscape polycultures' resilience will be modelled and experimentally improved by increased semiochemical diversity.

We will use the new knowledge to fine-tune our mechanistic understanding of crucial semiochemical beetle-tree relations, in particular those promising leads for innovation and management. Substantial outputs of the project will also be information, significantly changing views of the public towards forests and landscape management in close future.

Recruitment of 6 post-docs

https://extemit.fld.czu.cz/cs/r-12328-news/post-doc-call.html

The research team will consist of a combination of excellent young and more senior scientists both experienced in fundamental research, but have also senior scientists experienced in applied research. To this end, we are now recruiting 6 postdocs, each 2 for the 3 levels of study (Gene, Tree, and Landscape). The details are given in link above.

Deadline 2017 April 16th.

We prefer applications only to one of the positions, if your interests would cover >1 position, please note this in your Letter of Motivation. It should be noted that candidates with exceptional performance will have good opportunities be considered for younger scientist positions after their post-doc period.

Recruitment of 10 PhD students
