Dear colleagues,

We will shortly be publishing the attached job advertisement for a post-doctoral scholar in ecology.  The position will be based at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment at SLU in Uppsala, but is equally suitable for a candidate with a background in either freshwater or terrestrial ecology, and is a great opportunity to collaborate on a multinational European project.

Unfortunately a glitch in our job advertising routines means this won't appear on the SLU web until early next week, and as it is a relatively short application period I am trying to get in early by sharing the pdf with the Oikos list now. I would be very grateful if you could please circulate the attached pdf to any interested candidates that you may know.

Apologies for any cross-postings, and thanks in advance,

Brendan

Johan P Dahlgren

Associate Professor

Max-Planck Odense Center on the Biodemography of Aging

Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark

Postdoc in Stage-, Environment- and Age-based Plant Demography

Max Planck Odense Center on Biodemography of Aging (MaxO) and the Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark invite applications for an up to three-year post-doctoral position (one year, which may be extended to three years). The starting date of the position is 1 March 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. Application deadline: 30 November 2016.

The Max-Planck Odense Center on the Biodemography of Aging (MaxO) is an interdisciplinary and international co-operation among researchers drawn from demography, epidemiology, medicine, biology, mathematics and statistics. The centre conducts innovative research to discover the basic causes and key consequences of the age trajectories of mortality and fertility, including their policy implications.

MaxO-Biology focuses on the demography of non-human organisms including developing and applying novel methods to study the dynamics of populations, their evolution and the consequences. We are interested in understanding the variation in demographic parameters across and within taxa, with the strongest focus on animals and plants.

The successful candidate will work within the research project SEAD-Plant: Stage-, Environment- and Age-based Demography of Plants, funded by the Danish Council for Independent Research. The overall question of SEAD-Plant is: Do plants age? The postdoc project will be developed in collaboration with the host, but will focus on analysis of age- and stage-based demographic data as well as environmental data for plants. New data will be collected within the SEAD-Plant project, but already existing data will also be used. The main aim of the research will be to elucidate if and how the age of individuals affects demographic rates of a set of study species, and to determine ecological and evolutionary consequences of this. There may be field or lab work involved depending on the interests of the successful candidate.

We are looking for a dynamic candidate with a strong interest in plant demography and a PhD degree in a relevant field, such as plant ecology, population biology, or applied mathematics if focused on demographic modelling. The candidate must have experience in statistical and demographic modelling. The candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills, and experience with structured demographical models such as matrix models and integral projection models is a merit. Proficiency in using the R statistical programming language would also be an advantage, as would experience with ecological field work and experimental design.

[Oikos-listan] Postdoc in bee epidemiology at SLU

Postdoctoral position in statistical epidemiology and modelling

A two year full time position is available for a highly motivated post doc to take a central role in statistical epidemiology modelling projects for honeybee parasites and infectious diseases

The postdoc will develop and implement quantitative dynamic epidemiological models to predict the risk of honeybee colony disease and mortality in relation to alternative treatment and management options. The project will evaluate existing veterinary epidemiological models and adapt these to incorporate honeybee-specific parameters. [Oikos-listan] Fwd: Graduate Position: ETHZurich_Eawag.PathogenResistance

-----Original Message-----
From: Seppälä, Otto

Subject: FW: Graduate Position: ETHZurich_Eawag.PathogenResistance

A PhD student position is available in the group of aquatic ecology at ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich) / Eawag (Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Research), Switzerland

to study natural selection on immune function at gene expression level. Parasites present a serious threat for natural populations of free-living species. Immune defence is generally considered as an important trait in determining organisms' fitness as it eliminates harmful parasites. Therefore, understanding the evolution of immune defence is one of the key topics in predicting dynamics of host-parasite interactions. However, knowledge on the type and strength of selection on immune defence traits is very limited. The goals of the project are to assess (1) the type and strength of natural selection on the expression of several immune defence genes/pathways, (2) variation in selection imposed by infection risk, (3) trade-offs related to immune activity, and (4) local adaptation  of hosts to parasites in the wild. The study system is a freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis, and the work utilises the recently sequenced transcriptome of this species. The work will be conducted in collaboration with the Prof. Coen Adema (University of New
Mexico) and the Genetic Diversity Centre at ETH (http://www.gdc.ethz.ch/).

General information about the research group can be found at http://www.ae.ethz.ch/

We invite highly motivated students with a good background in transcriptomics and evolutionary ecology to apply for the position. A MSc or equivalent degree is required. Earlier experience with the study system is not required. The project is funded by Swiss National Science Foundation for 3 years.

Earliest starting date: February 1, 2017

Qualified persons are invited to apply by email. Please attach a single PDF file including a letter of motivation, CV, and names plus contact information of two references to otto.seppaelae@env.ethz.ch. Subject line should read "PHD-Position 2016". Evaluation of applications starts November 7, 2016. Top candidates will be interviewed.
